This year, we welcomed Erick Sede to the Hillcrest community! Erick began his studies at the Lutheran Brethren Seminary this past September, and he is living and working in the Men’s Residential Hall of Hillcrest. While LB Seminary is providing scholarship funds for Erick’s tuition, we (Hillcrest) want to come along side of Erick to provide his housing and boarding needs, as well as some money to use for other expenses.

Since we first came to know Erick through his translation ministry with us during our mission trips to the Dominican Republic, we are asking all those who have been on a previous DR mission trip to prayerfully considering supporting Erick.

Remember Erick in your prayers, as he is now living on the Hillcrest campus and studying at the LB Seminary. Please use the form on the right to send in your financial support for Erick. Thank you for this unique way to support Erick Sede with your prayers and funds.

A NOTE FROM MR. Preston

HLA Instructor Gregg Preston

In the spring of 2008, Hillcrest Academy seniors began an annual outreach trip to the Dominican Republic. While our teams were teaching, preaching, and articulating the message of the Gospel of Christ to the neighborhoods in the Dominican, several Dominican Christians served as our language translators during our stays. For several of our trips, a young Dominican named Erick Sede joined our team and became a trusted partner in the Gospel. Erick has earned a college education and began an evangelistic ministry to youth within the public school systems in the Dominican. Erick is enthusiastic and mission minded with a unique gift package that combines a strong entrepreneurial spirit with a compassionate heart for people in need. Erick has felt a call to seminary and many barriers have been overcome for Erick as he has enrolled in the Lutheran Brethren Seminary in Fergus Falls. As he begins his first year in seminary, we are looking for a group from our alumni of the DR Mission teams that would support Erick during his time at the LB Seminary.

Q&A With Erick

Q&A With Erick

Q: How did you come to Lutheran Brethren Seminary?

ES: After graduating with honors from Universidad Nacional Evangelica (UNEV) with my degree in Business Administration in the Dominican Republic in 2013, I started working in a well-paid job. With that opportunity in front of me, I begin to build my business career and grew within the corporation.  However, I was feeling the same calling I had after I graduated from high school—a calling to serve the Lord by preaching his Gospel to young people. Finally, I decided to come to LBS and leave all of this in the past because I realized that this was my time to follow God’s calling and be preparing to serve the Lord more effectively. Seminary is changing my life already. I am learning to be humble, learning to be a learner before pretending to be a teacher, and with those values, to be able to connect better with the non-believers and present them the Gospel in a friendly way.

Q: What is your involvement with Hillcrest?

ES: After being a translator for the senior classes of HLA in the Dominican Republic since 2011, now I have the unique opportunity to be the first Dominican Dean and invest time and energy with young men and women while they are living on the HLA campus. I am here because I love the Lord and I love to communicate his message. HLA is a great platform the Lord has put in my hands to preach the Gospel to many nations here Fergus Fall.

Q: HOW DO YOU SENSE THE LORD LEADING?

ES: Right now, the Lord is leading me to my calling as a seminary student, which is the primary reason why I am here. It takes time and all of my energy and effort are oriented to my learning challenge. Also, I wish to invest time with teenagers in a way that it is done in the USA. In the near future, I pray I will be holding a Youth Pastor position in one of the CLB Churches around the Fergus Fall area. After I graduate, I am dreaming of opening a Spanish Department in the US through the CLB. However, as I am learning from a new friend here: It is not about you, it is about Jesus. Therefore, I am open to go where the Lord will take me.

Q: WHAT THINGS HAVE SURPRISED YOU THE MOST?

ES: I thought there would be more racism...people here have been very welcoming and warm.  Everyone is nice in Fergus Falls.  My expectation was to prepare myself for some difficulty being black, but I haven’t  had any problems. Also, the food has been a surprise.  It is very different here.  It has been a challenge to get used the amount of bread.  My body is not adjusting well yet to the diet change.
