Breaking the Spiral of Silence

Charles Colson's Two-Minute Warnings are classic. The message above describes a passion of his before his death, namely calling attention and giving courage to those tho are defending the truths of a Biblical worldview. There is a growing movement of silence among Christian's regarding social issues which stand in opposition to God's image and are being purported as normal.

The Principal's Blog this week notes some of the avenues of training Hillcrest employs to equip students to break the spiral of silence and prepare students for a life of significance.

Choir Announces Easter Tour

The Hillcrest Academy Concert Choir has announced the tour locations for the Easter Concert Tour facilitated by Hillcrest's music department. You can view the dates and follow the blog at the Concert Tour Blog on Hillcrest's website. The tour will travel to the Southwest corner of the United States on a 12 location 16-day tour.

You can follow the tour on Hillcrest's twitter feed and follow the twitter trend #HLAtour. Photos will post to Facebook throughout the tour if you'd like to follow the progress and keep connected as students represent Christ through the concert tour.

Prayer Day

Every year at HLA the Administration set aside a full day of school devoted to prayer. The tradition started on the cusp of a revival at Hillcrest a number of years ago and has continued as a solemn practice dedicated to Christ.

Students gather in the Chapel to begin prayer day, traditionally with a devotional period or small group prayer session. Following some guidance students are directed into the Word and break-up for times of prayer with their classmates. After an open lunch period students gather for a student led share time with the student body chaplain for the high school students and the faculty advisers for the Junior High students.

The Spiritual Formations day this year is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5th. To catch a glimpse at what students experience please visit our Campus Ministries page to see a highlight video from Prayer Day last year.

Chapel Testimony Series

This year students have spent Friday chapels sharing how God has gripped them during their time at Hillcrest. Recently a number of faculty members have also had a chance to communicate the reality of Christ and how they have been captivated by God.

Recently Mr. Undseth gave a Chapel presentation to students regarding the conviction he has had after studying Genesis. We encourage you to watch the video and talk to your students about some of the faculty and staff who have recently shared their story in the Chapel series through the Campus Ministries Blog.

College Corner

The deadline for Dollars for Scholars scholarship applications is just one short week away.

Fergus Falls Area Dollars for Scholars is offering two application entry support sessions in an open house format to answer any questions you have as you enter your scholarship application online. Session #1 is Thursday, February 28th from Noon - 4:00pm, and Session #2 is Monday, March 4th from 3:30pm - 8:00pm. Both sessions will be held in the Otter Community Room at Kennedy Secondary School.

Come and get answers to your questions and confirm that your application has been submitted successfully. You can contact Nancy Eldridge-Hess at nancyeldredgehess@gmail.com or 508-983-4911 if you are unable to attend one of these sessions and need further assistance filling out your application.

	Spiritual Formations Day Spiritual Formations Day is scheduled for Tuesday, March 6th for both the Junior High and Senior High school.

	Boys Basketball Playoffs The Comet Guys are slated to take-on New York Mills in the first round of section playoffs on Thursday, March 7th at 7pm in the Hillcrest Student Activities Center.

	ACT Test Deadline The ACT test deadline for the April 13th test is Friday, March 8th. Register at the ACT website.

	All School Band Concert The All School Band Concert is scheduled for Monday, March 11th at 7pm in the Bethel LBC Sanctuary.

	Knowledge Bowl Meet The Knowledge Bowl Sub-Region meet is scheduled for Tuesday, March 12th from 8am-2pm at the M-State campus in Fergus Falls, MN.

The Difference a Stand Makes

The hall resounded with the voices of politicians and church leaders singing Amazing Grace. Eric Metaxas closed his speech before the National Prayer Breakfast in 2012 with the formidable hymn as he spoke with confident eloquence calling for action and resolve against dehumanizing policies that are being implemented in the United States. His speech no doubt left him with a dry mouth, noting President Obama to his right and Nancy Pelosi to his left as he spoke against many of the actions they have taken politically to dehumanize the unborn and diminish the leadership voice of the church regarding social issues.

This week's Principal's Blog introduces Eric Metaxas' book on Detrich Bonhoeffer with a short video and a short picture of how Hillcrest is working to instill a Bonhoeffer-like resolve into the hearts of students to live a life of significance.

Winter Weekend Greeting

This past weekend was a highlight for many high school students. The annual President's Day Winter Weekend is a Christian Camp's highlight for the winter. Both Tuscarora and Inspiration Point Bible Camp held special gatherings.

Hillcrest students unable to make the trip to Tuscarora to attend Winter Weekend put together a short video testimony and greeting for their friends. You're able to view the video on the Campus Ministries Blog.

Hillcrest Halls Valentines Edition

Secret Brother week is a time at Hillcrest where female students secretly bless their friends with gifts and goodies in celebration of Valentine's Day. The week ends with the girls revealing their secret identity to their adopted brothers for the week and the brothers return the favor with goodies or a dinner for their secret sisters.

College Corner

A number of scholarships are nearing their deadlines as graduation approaches. A local scholarship that is highly revered is the Mike Rohde Spirit Scholarship.

The Mike Rohde Spirit Scholarship Award Board, the Fergus Falls Sertoma Club, and the Rohde family founded the Mike Rohde Spirit Scholarship Award in 2002.
After Mike’s untimely death of a hereditary heart disease in 2000 at age 51, the Mike Rohde Foundation was established to administer a scholarship award in his name. The award is meant to honor an individual who embodies the warm, fun-loving, and energetic spirit of Mike and his dedication to contributing to his community.

The Mike Rohde Spirit Scholarship Award Board highly recommends that all senior students be aware of this Scholarship and the deadline of March 29th. Please be aware that the selection committee looks very closely at all applications and considers many factors in addition to academic performance. The committee is looking for an applicant who has the greatest potential to succeed.

The dormitories are planning a Friday Night packed with activity Friday, February 22nd. High school students are invited to attend.

Concert Choir Performance
Hillcrest's Concert Choir is gearing-up for the spring tour with a local tour to Bethlehem Lutheran Church and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Knowledge Bowl Meet
Hillcrest's Knowledge Bowl team will represent Hillcrest at the Concordia Moorhead meet this Wednesday. They will depart at 7:40am and return to HLA at approx. 3:30pm.

The Principal's Desk

Every year we have students who walk the halls asking questions similar to those asked in the video above. The incredible beauty of the Christian perspective of the world is encapsulated in the John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son. That whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life." This simple reality is what gives students significance. The fact that Jesus Christ found creation worth His life is a clarion statement for the world that they are special.

Chapel Testimony

Mariana has had a remarkable time at Hillcrest. Her growth in Christ and self-confidence is notable. Last Friday Mariana shared some of her experience in words of encouragement through a testimony to her peers.

Using the Bible as the foundation in the classroom provides a significant means for students to grow in their understanding of God as they pursue their academic studies. The use of Scripture also makes them more aware of the power of God working in numerous ways as they go throughout their daily routines.

	Jr. High Ski Trip The Jr. High will venture to their annual ski trip Thursday, Feb. 14th from 8am-3pm.

Who Determines Your Value?

"No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because death is very likely the single best invention of life." Those were the words spoken by former Apple CEO Steve Jobs at a Stanford commencement. The innovative leader lost a battle with cancer years following his comment about "the best invention of life".

The most awkward reality of Jobs' comments is the complete utilitarian view of life. It is a dangerous idea that has created inhumane results. The video above is a short snippet from John Stonestreet on the reality of Euthanasia in our society. The video and a short commentary on the right to life debate are part of the Principal's Blog this week.

Dominican Trip Explained to Local Service Group

Gregg Preston led a group of students in recalling some of the opportunities and growth that occurred on the Dominican Republic trip to a group of local service people. The Kiwanis service group has a great appreciation and love for Hillcrest faculty. You'll understand why they're so appreciative of the staff and faculty at Hillcrest as you listen to Mr. Preston's explanation of the Dominican Mission trip.

Students Represent Hillcrest at Kiwanis Group

Jaron Olsoe, Taylor Filippini and Skyler Ruf joined Key Club President Kathleen Martinson for a presentation of the Dominican mission trip to Kiwanis. Kiwanis is a local service group made of local business leaders who seek to support the local community by providing resources for students to succeed.

Hillcrest's Key Club leadership had the opportunity to present a number of schools and organizations to the service group in a call of partnership in supporting students in the Dominican Republic. Many members of Kiwanis commented on the ability of Hillcrest students to communicate their passion and desire to be servants in the world.

We invite you to watch their 2 minute testimonies of the Dominican Republic mission experience and hear how they have been rejuvinated to live a life of significance.

One way Hillcrest seeks to communicate to it's constituency is through the Hillcrest Connection. The Connection is full of stories from around the campus and details some of the exciting things that God has done and is continuing to do at Hillcrest.

{Don't} Practice Patiently

Practice Patience. A sign posted in the kitchen as a reminder to Grandma, who didn't really need reminding of many things, noted in yearly birthday cards and recollection of my favorite athlete and what books I was reading in grade school. But a small play on my Grandmother's reminder has greatly changed the outlook I have for practice. Practice patiently?

Hillcrest Highlights

Each year students make meaningful memories with room-mates, teachers, RA staff and others at Hillcrest. We have tried to capture a few of these memorable moments in the My Hillcrest Academy Highlights series.

This week you can follow game-day with Abbe and Zoey. Abbe will take you through her pre-game happenings as the Lady Comets faced-off against Battle Lake last week. Zoey will walk you through some prep-work the Cheerleaders focus on in their effort to lead HLA in support for Comet Basketball.

College scholarship applications are nearing their deadlines as the school year enters the final semester. The Dollars for Scholars scholarship is designed for Fergus Falls residents. The link to the left details application opportunities for interested families.

The Long for Structure

Big Bird is still alive and well. For some longing for redemption in entertainment, they're grateful Mitt Romney's threat to defund PBS hasn't occurred. The tax-payer funded Public Broadcast Service (PBS) has quadrupled viewership with one fell-swoop of a hit TV drama called Downton Abbey. The video above echos the cry of Downton, to unite the social structure of the past with contemporary thinking today.

Students in Chapel

Amy Zimmerman is a first year student at HLA, and as a Senior she is enjoying every minute of it. Hear a quick testimony and listen to some of the worship coming out of the student led Chapel services that occur Friday morning. You can watch the video at our Campus Ministries Blog.

Students for Life Presents at Christian Grade school

The Hillcrest Students for Life club recently presented the pro-life case for a local grade school in Fergus Falls. Morning Son Christian School's chapel is a 45 minute time for grade school students to be encouraged in their faith, in addition to their course work at the Biblically-based school. Hillcrest students were invited to bring a message of life to the school through the Students for Life club.

FAFSA for Seniors

Hillcrest's guidance department is working to help students move into the College or University setting. As part of their work in this area we have elected to communicate some practices families should work on in the coming months. This week we talk about Financial Aid, namely FAFSA.

Financial aid is intended to help families pay of college. The federal government has instituted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as a universally accepted form to determine a student's Expected Family Contribution (EFC). Basically, the difference between the cost of attending a school and a student's EFC is that student's financial need. Schools try to come as close as possible to meeting a student's financial need. Following January 1, families can submit the FAFSA application. The earlier a student applies for FAFSA the more likely they are to receive the financial aid they need to attend their desired school. It is encouraged for families to apply for FAFSA online as it is quicker and often protects against errors that could cause a delay in the financial aid process (ONLINE FAFSA APPLICATION). Not all education institutions accept FAFSA, contact your potential college or university to ensure their involvement in the FAFSA program.

	Saturday Morning Comet Camp Comet Camp kicked-off on January 19th in the New Gym. If you'd like to register your grade school student for camp please visit the Comet Camp Page on the Hillcrest website.

	Saturday Basketball Double-Header Comet Basketball will be rocking in the New Gym Saturday, January 19th at 1pm. Stop by and cheer on the Comets as the Guys and Girls play host to Wheaton.

	Comet Athletics The Comet Basketball teams play Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week. Check out the schedule and make plans to cheer them on through the Comet Practice Schedule.

	Jr. High Spelling Bee The annual Jr. High Spelling Bee is held in the Hillcrest Chapel on January 29th at 8:30am. For more information please contact Kathy Doering (kdoering@ffhillcrest.org)

Lighting a Candle for Newtown

Light a candle outside a movie theatre. That was author and speaker Eric Metaxas' suggestion to call America to what movie goers of Django Unchained and Texas Chainsaw 3-D are supporting. Many attending Django and Texas Chainsaw probably don' t think they're supporting violence, like that found at the Sandy Hook Elementary massacre, but attending the film sure isn't a stand for the lives of those lost.

This week's Principal's Blog brings to the light the challenges of violent films and how the human brain is impacted through pathways created by what is seen and done throughout daily life. We encourage you to view the video above and start conversations in your circles of influence on this topic.

Chickenpox Case Identified at HLA

This past week, the Hillcrest administration emailed you regarding a student that had come down with a case of chickenpox. The Minnesota Department of Health will offer a special Chickenpox vaccination clinic for our student body. To find out more regarding this offering please read a letter to parents posted on the Principal's Blog.

Excitement at HLA

The halls were bustling this week after an appreciated Christmas vacation. Many students were asked what they were excited for as the new school year started. Check out their comments in the ONE WORD segment.

IPBC Winter Weekend

Registration deadlines are closing in for Inspiration Point Bible Camp's Winter Weekend. A great weekend spent with friends, the camp also provides a fantastic retreat for students to think about big questions and issues in life.

The speaker this year is Pastor Jason Lang. He plans to conduct a number of question-and-answer sessions geared for the high school students to process some of God's Truth in a world that pushes faith and religon to the curb.

College Corner

This week's College Corner discusses payment plans and options for families as they look forward to the expense of college. We highlight a savings and planning option known as the 529 Plan.

A 529 Plan is an education savings plan operated by a state or educational institution to help families set aside future college costs. The plan is named 529 because it falls under Section 529 in the Internal Revenue Code which created these types of savings plans in 1996.

529 plans are usually categorized as either prepaid or savings plans. If families elect the savings plan option, they will see their investment work much like a 401K or IRA. Contributions will be matched into mutual funds or similar investments, indicating that the account will fluctuate depending on the performance of the particular option selected. If families elect the prepaid option, all or part of their costs will be prepaid to the in-state or out-of-state college they select. The Private College 529 Plan is a separate prepaid plan for private colleges.

There are two ways to invest in a 529 Plan. Families can do so through a direct 529 Plan manager or through a financial advisor.

	Disco Dodgeball Dorm Event Friday, January 11th at 9pm in the Main Building Gymnasium the annual Disco Dodgeball tournament will occur for all high school students.

	Saturday Morning Comet Camp POSTPONED Due to incliment weather, the start of Saturday Morning Comet Camp is postponed from Saturday, January 12th to Saturday, January 19th starting at 9am in the New Gym. For more info on the camp please visit the Comet Camp Page on the Hillcrest website.

	Vaccination Clinic A Chickenpox (Varicella) vaccination clinic has been scheduled for Monday, January 14th. For more information please read the Principal's letter regarding the clinic.

Comet Guys Basketball vs. Underwood

The Comet Guys' first match after break is against perennial rival Underwood high school. The game is an important conference match that will greatly affect the conference standings and possibly section seeding.

Living in Favor

Enduring dysentery, hepatitis, and a chronic problem with parasites was Bruce's lot out of high school. This week's Principal's blog kicks-off 2013 asking us to focus on the Great Giver. The blog calls us to find joy and peace in communicating Christ by stewarding the gifts and road God has called us to for the glory of Jesus Christ.

Saturday Morning Comet Camp

Hillcrest Comet Basketball players are looking forward to waking up Saturday mornings to greet a gym of grade school students. The Comet Camp program is a fun basketball camp for students in 1st through 6th grade during January and February.

If you'd like to find out more information on the camp and how Hillcrest players are mentoring these students please visit the Comet Camp Page on the Hillcrest website. If you'd like to register a 1st through 6th grade student, please complete the online registration.

LiveStream Athletic Events

Due to conference competition for our Basketball teams, the LiveStream archive will post basketball games at the completion of the basketball season. LiveStream events will still broadcast live on the day of the event.

Disco Dodgeball

Disco Dodgeball is a highlight for many students in the second semester. The Highlight Video to the right is a short snippet of last year's event. We encourage you to watch the video and catch a glimpse of this fun evening.

All high school students are invited to this event on Friday, January 11th at 9pm in the Main Building Gymnasium.

College Corner

In this weeks College Corner we introduce parents to the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP). CLEP offers the opportunity for students to receive college credit for what they already know. Students are able to earn qualifying scores on up to 33 introductory-level college subject examinations and accelerate their education.

Exams run 90-minutes and cost only $77 each. Administered at 1,700 test centers, exams can earn students college credit which is accepted at 2,900 colleges and universities. CLEP offers exams covering material taught in courses that is generally taught in the first two years of college. Most CLEP exams are designed to correspond to one-semester courses, although some correspond to full-year or two-year courses.

Around the Castle

	Dormitories Open The dormitories open at 3pm on Saturday, January 5th. The Norwegian students arrive in the evening of January 6th. Students are invited to visit the dormitories to greet their friends as they look forward to second semester.

	Second Semester Classes Begin Classes will start on Monday, January 7th.

	Register for ACT The Feb. 9th test for the ACT has a scheduled registration deadline of Friday, January 11th. Families are encouraged to register at the ACT Website.
