A Significant Campus Need

Building community is a critical component of the Hillcrest experience, and this facility will be the primary venue. As the hub of campus life, the Student Union will provide common space for student and Resident Life staff to dine, gather, study, relax and connect.

Kitchen & Dining Hall

For one hundred years Hillcrest's current kitchen and dining facilities have served the masses. But it isn’t a secret that the dining hall is operating on borrowed time. The facilities are well-worn, and the kitchen area is in need of significant upgrades that require more space than is available.

Recent meetings with the Minnesota Department of Health revealed that a move is required for us to continue serving students. With the desire to better serve our students, and an understanding that an upgrade is necessary for fire and building regulations, we are stepping-out in faith with this project.

Student Commons

The other half of the the Student Union will house something entirely new to the Hillcrest campus: a Student Commons. The commons will be a public gathering space where students -- local and boarding, girls and boys -- can gather to relax, study, talk and connect as they process and integrate what they're learning in the classrooms and living in the dorms. A dynamic Student Union is a vital addition to our campus. It offers a welcoming meeting point with potential students and their families. Top-notch dining and commons facilities are critical for Hillcrest to stay competitive in the national private-school market.

The Lutheran Brethren Seminary has expanded their ministry and built a new Seminary building across the football field. This provided a vacant building in the middle of our campus just waiting to be re-purposed.

Utilizing a preexisting building saved on costs in moving our dining hall. The renovated space will feature plenty of windows and natural lighting for the wide-open spaces where students will gather. A grand entrance opens to the Resident Life Director’s office, complete with a conference room for dorm leadership meetings. The Student Commons space features a coffee house, complete with sofas and tables set around a fireplace where students will gather before and after school and friends and alumni will congregate before and after football games.

A hallway connects the Student Commons with the spacious dining hall. Students will congregate around circle tables, building community in a relaxed and comfortable setting before school with breakfast, during lunchtime breaks from classes, and in dinner meals. A two-line serving set-up allows students to partake in a salad bar and main-course meal at their leisure, set before a new commercial grade kitchen that will serve Hillcrest for generations.

Because of the urgency of the project we started right away. The Seminary moved out of the building in mid-May. We began demolition work for the new build-out the next week. The construction timeline has the Student Union ready for occupancy by mid-August. Time is of the essence.

WIN-WIN-WIN

This unique opportunity blesses our ministry partners. The purchase of the building helped the LB Seminary build it’s new facility across the football field. Hillcrest has an upgraded Kitchen and Dining Hall, as well as a public student Commons. CLB ministries benefit from a closer proximity to future church leaders.
