Mary Jo Good

Math Department

Why do you teach at Hillcrest?

I love teaching in a Christian environment. The kids are great and my co-workers are so supportive.

Educational Background

I grew up and received my K-12 education in Moorhead; K-6 at the Moorhead State College Campus School and 7-12 at Moorhead Jr. High and High School. After high school, I attended Moorhead Technical College and became a certified, registered dental assistant. I earned an A.A. from Fergus Falls Community College in May of 1998 and a B.S. from MSUM in May of 2001 (Secondary Mathematics Education-certified 5-12). My mother was an elementary teacher and my father was a college instructor, football, wrestling and track coach.

Work Experience

I have worked as a dental assistant, bookkeeper, and waitress, but spent most of my work years as co-owner/manager of the Shoreline Restaurant and Lanes. I student taught at Fergus Falls Middle School and last year I taught at Wadena/ Deer Creek High School (Geometry, Algebra and Integrated Math: grades 9-12).

Family

My husband, Lynn, is a district sales manager for Food Service of America. He, my son Tom, and I live in Battle Lake. Tom is a senior at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy. Nicole, my oldest daughter, teaches kindergarten. Her husband Erik is working on his PhD. at the University of Minnesota. Michelle my younger daughter is a social worker for West Fargo Public Schools. She works with emotionally disabled elementary students.

Activities
I really enjoy sports, so my favorite pastime has been watching my children's and my student's games. I like to read and spend time at the lake.

Dreams & Goals
I hope to earn my Masters in Math Education.

Motto
I feel it is very important to have a classroom atmosphere where students feel free to ask mathematical questions without being ridiculed. I try to maintain a classroom where respect for everyone is shown.
