For the fourth game in a row this season, the Hillcrest Comets went down to the last at bat to decide the game. After loading the bases with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th, Hillcrest's Joe Ommundsen scored the only run of the game on a throwing error from the Chokio-Alberta shortstop. Zach Nersten walked off with a 3-hit shutout and his second victory of the young season as the Comets beat C-A 1-0.
The C-A Spartans threatened in nearly every inning as 4 Hillcrest errors opened the door, but some clutch pitching by Nersten kept the Spartans off the board. Runners were stranded at 3rd base in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 6th innings.
"It was a gutsy performance by Zach. He didn't let what was going on behind him affect his job: Get the next batter and keep making quality pitches. I was very pleased with his composure throughout the game, and I'm glad our guys were able to give him a W because he really deserved it," declared Coach Steve Undseth. "I feel for Cody Picht also because he deserved to win as well. It was an exciting fast-paced high school baseball game."
The game winning rally went down like this. With one out Joe Ommundsen singled. With two outs Clifford Vestol doubled down the left field line, sending Ommundsen to third. After getting down 0-2 on the count, Mark Undseth worked a walk to load the bases for Cooper Patch. He grounded deep in the hole to short and the high throw allowed Patch to reach and Ommundsen to score the game-winner.
Both Nersten and Picht struck out 5 and walked 3.
Hillcrest is now 3-1 in the conference. The Comets travel to Ortonville on Thursday, April 29 to take on the Trojans.
