Comet Boys Lose to Lakers in OT

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer Team was defeated by the Detroit Lakes Lakers in their final regular season game by the score of 3-2 in overtime. 

The Lakers scored the only goal in the first half after electing to attack with a strong south wind.  The Comets came out in the second half and scored two goals to pull ahead.  Romario Moreno scored eight minutes into the second half for the Comets off a pass from Josue Gomezcoello.  The Comets took the lead 25 minutes into the half when Kevin Franco scored off a blast, following a feed from Romario Moreno. Detroit Lakes scored in the last five minutes to tie the score and send it into OT.

The Lakers scored in the first half of overtime to take the lead, and the score held until the end of the contest.

The Comets finish their regular season with a record of 9-6-0.

The Comets now regroup to prepare for the playoff season, with first round starting next Thursday.

Comets Fall to Johnnies in OT

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer Team was defeated by St. Johns Prep 2-1 on Tuesday at St. Johns in over time.  

The Comets were ahead at the end of the first half, following a header goal by Luis Martinez, assisted by Kevin Franco, which occurred midway through the half.  The Johnnies tied it up, five minutes into the second half, attacking up the right side, and then collected the game winner in the first OT period.

The Comets launched thirteen shots on the Johnnies net.  HLA Keeper, Taylor Isaac, turned away eight shots for the Comets. 

The Comets travel to Detroit Lakes for their final regular season game on Thursday.

Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids boys soccer team is the Team of the Week for the Fergus Falls Pizza Ranch Restaurant.

The Comets went 3-0 in the past week, recording three shutouts.  They now have seven shutouts this season and have a 9-4 overall record.

Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids started the week with a 6-0 win over Crookston on Tuesday in Pelican Rapids.  They then traveled to Walker on Thursday and returned home with a 13-0 victory over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.  The finished the week on Saturday with a 4-0 win over East Grand Forks on the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy field.

Comet Boys Earn Shutout Win Over Greenwave

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer Team defeated the East Grand Forks Green Wave, Saturday at HLA, by the score of 4-0.  Senior Co-captain, Taylor Isaac, made six saves in the net for the Comet shutout.

It took most of the first half for the Comets to score.  With five minutes remaining,Byron Varner received a defense splitting pass from Luis Martinez and placed a shot past the Greenwave keeper to put the Comets up by one at half.  Eight and a half minutes into the second half, Luis Martinez scored, following a perfect pass over the top of the defense from Josue Gomezcoello, catching Martinez in full stride.  Martinez had only the...

Comets Boys Score 13 Goals in Win at Walker

The Hillcrest Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer Team defeated Walker-Hackensack-Akeley on Thursday by the score of 13-0.  Eight different players scored in the contest.  Taylor Isaac and Endre Lunde teamed up in goal, for a half each, to share in the shutout, stopping five shots on net.

Scoring started early, just one minute into the contest, when Luis Martinez scored off an assist from Byron Varner.  Five minutes later, Byron Varner scored off an assist from Luis Martinez.  At the eight minute mark, Martinez scored his second goal off a rebound following a Luis Diaz blast from the right side of the field.  At the 15 minute mark, Endre Lunde (second half goalie) scored following an assist fromKevin Franco.  Midway thru the half, Byron Varner scored his second goal following an assist from Jose Stender.  Five minutes later, Luis Martinez, scored his third goal of the game, off an assist from Josue Gomezcoello.  Five minutes before for the half, Gomezcoello scored off an assist from Quincy Undseth, ending the half with the Comets up 7-0.

Six minutes into the second half, Luis Martinez scored his fourth and final goal, off an assist from Jonatan Stava.  First half goal keeper, Taylor Isaac, tallied next, off an assist from Kevin Franco, fifteen minutes into the half.  Byron Varner scored his third goal of the contest, at 21 minutes, off an assist from Jonatan Stava.  Senior Stopper, Dillon O'Sullivan, scored at the 36 minute mark, off an assist from Felipe Moreno.  Edgar Diaz scored two minutes later, off an assist from Luis Diaz.  Luis Diaz also assisted on the last goal of the contest.  With one minute left, Diaz placed a drop back pass for Felipe Moreno, who blasted the ball into the back of the WHA net.

The Comets face East Grand Forks, Saturday at home.

HLA/PR Girls Blank Walker-Hackensack-Akeley

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls’ soccer team traveled to Walker on Thursday and brought home a 6-0 victory over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley.

Hannah Haegeland scored the first goal off an assist from Abbe Monacelli and Monacelli scored the second goal to give the Comets a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls soccer team scored all three of their goals in the first half as they posted a 3-1 victory in Crookston on Tuesday.

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer Team defeated Crookston on Tuesday in Pelican Rapids, by the score of 6-0.

Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Girls Defeat Minnewaska Area

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls soccer team scored two goals in each half as they turned back the Minnewaska Area Lakers 4-1 on Thursday afternoon in Fergus Falls.

Comet Boys Soccer Team Posts Another Shutout

The Hillcrest Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer Team defeated the Minnewaska Lakers Thurday at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy, by the score of 5-0.

Byron Varner scored first for the Comets off a pass from Joshua Gomescollo, thirteen minutes into the contest. Twenty nine minutes into the first half, Luis Martinez scored on a blast following a pass from Joshua Gomescollo, attacking from the right sideline. Just five minutes later, Martinez scored again, off a beautiful pass from defender Chris Franco (Milwaukee), ending the half with the Comets up by three. Eight minutes into the second half, Kevin Franco scored an unassisted goal, attacking up the left sideline. The last goal of the game came from Senior Co-Captain Luis Diaz, off a blast from the top of the eighteen.

Senior Keeper Co-Captain, Taylor Isaac, made five stops on goal for his fourth shutout of the season. The Comets launched eighteen shots on the Laker goal, defended by keeper, Ethan Anderson. "Anderson made several excellent stops in tonights game,” said HLA Head Coach Rod Jensen. “The Comets saw excellent scrappy team defense from Dillon O'SulivanTrevor LeechFelipe MorenoJose Stender, and Eddie Mancilla."

The Comets, now 6-2, travel to St. Cloud on Saturday for a match against rivals, St. Cloud Cathedral.

Late Penalty Kick Goal Lifts Bemidji Past HLA/PR Boys 2-1

The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy/Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer team was defeated by the Bemidji Lumberjacks Thursday on a wet, soaked field in Bemidji, by the score of 2 – 1. 

Bemidji scored first, fifteen minutes into the game when midfielder Isak Somnerscored on a blast off a cross from the right side.  The Comets quickly tied the game two minutes later when Byron Varner scored attacking up the left side off a pass from Jose Stender.  The half ended in a one-one tie.  Both teams battled hard and had scoring chances in the second half.   Midway through the half, the Comets were called for a handball in the box, allowing a penalty kick.  Kyle Fodness, converted the opportunity into a goal for the Lumberjacks.

The Comets, now 5-3, have a rematch against Minnewaska Area at home on Thursday.

Lady Comets Struggle in Second Half of 8-1 Loss at Bemidji

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls’ soccer team traveled to Bemidji on Monday and the host Lumberjacks broke open a 1-1 game with seven second half goals to post an 8-1 victory over the Comets.

Comet Boys Win 2-1 Soccer Match in East Grand Forks

After being down 1-0 in the first half, the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy/Pelican Rapids Comets scored two second half goals to defeat the East Grand Forks Green Wave 2-1 in boys soccer on Saturday in East Grand Forks. 

Seventeen minutes into the first half, EGF was awarded a penalty kick for a hand ball infraction inside the Comet box.  The Greenwave capitalized on the opportunity and took a one to nothing lead into the half.  Six and a half minutes into the second half, Byron Varner scored on a non-assisted blast from the top of the eighteen.  The Comets pressured the EGF net for the entire half and finally tallied with two and a half minutes left in the contest.  Chris Franco took a long throw in, deep in the EGF end that traveled over all players and into the box.  Senior Co-Captain, Luis Diaz, met the ball in the box and placed it in the back of the net for the Comets Lakes to Prairie Conference victory.

In JV action the Comets defeated EGF by the score of 1-0.  Danny Franco scored the Comet goal in that contest.

The Comets, now 5-2, travel to Bemidji on Tuesday.

Comet Girls Fall to EGF 6-2

On Saturday in East Grand Forks, the Greenwave girls’ soccer team took a 2-0 halftime lead over the Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Comets and added four second half goals to the Comets two, taking a 6-2 victory.

With the score 4-0 in favor of EGF, Abbe Monacelli put the ball into the back corner of the goal, scoring the first Comet goal of the game.  The Greenwave came right back and answered with a goal of their own to make it 5-1.  About five minutes later, Monacelli made a run with the ball to the corner and wound up with the goal with some help from the...

Comets Blank Otters 3-0 in Boys Soccer Match

Three first half goals put the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Comets on top of the Otters Monday at HLA.  The Comets kept the Otters off the scoreboard and recorded a 3-0 boys soccer victory.

The Comets came out strong early with a goal just one minute into the contest byJonatan Stava at the top of the eighteen following a drop back pass from Josue Gomezcoello.  The Comets struck again, two minutes later, with a goal by Byron Varner, who beat two defenders following a pass up the middle by Jonatan Stava.  28 minutes into the  half, Luis Martinez scored off an assist from Kevin Franco to end all scoring for the game.

The Otters had several chances to score in the second half, but senior captain Comet Keeper, Taylor Isaac, denied all shots for his third shutout of the season.

The Comets saw good midfield control from Luis DiazDillon O'SullivanJose Stender, and Romario Moreno.

The Comets now 4-2 travel to EGF on Saturday for a match with the Green Wave.

A break away goal by Kristie Thorkildson in the second half was all the scoring the Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls soccer team could muster on Thursday afternoon as they lost to Detroit Lakes 9-1 on the Comets home field.  The Lakers led 6-0 at the half.

Lunde Scores Both Goals in Hillcrest Soccer Win

Two goals by Endre Lunde pushed the Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids Boys Soccer Team past the Crookston Pirates 2-0 on Thursday in Crookston. 

Lunde picked up a loose ball inside the 18, four minutes into the contest, and placed a shot that beat the Pirate keeper.   Lunde scored again with a blast from the top of the eighteen, following a drop back pass from Byron Varner, eleven minutes into the second half.  The Comets saw a good defensive effort from several players including:  Dillon O’SullivanChris FrancoEddie Mancilla, and Felipe Morenaholding the Pirates to just two shots on goal, giving Taylor Isaac his second shutout of the season

The Comets launched seventeen shots on the Pirate Goal, but, “our attack lacked patience and good shot execution,” observed head coach Rod Jensen.

In JV action the Comets won by a score of 8 – 0, with goals coming from:  Tommy Thompson (one), Oscar Farestveit (two), Josue Gomezcoello (two) and Danny Franco (three).

The Comets play the Fergus Falls Otters at home on Monday at 4:00pm.

Comet Girls Soccer Team Wins in Glenwood

The Hillcrest/Pelican Rapids girls soccer team defeated Minnewaska Area 6-1 in Glenwood on Tuesday.

Abbe Monacelli scored the first two goals of the game and the Comets ended the half with Kristie Thorkildsen finishing a crossing pass from Monacelli and placing the ball in the back corner of the net to give them a 3-0 lead.

Comets Shutout by Minnewaska Area

Two first half goals by the Minnewaska Area Lakers was enough to shut out the Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Boys Soccer Team Tuesday in Glenwood.  

The Comets launched 18 shots on the Minnewaska net during the contest, but all were turned away by the sophomore keeper, Ethan Anderson.  The Lakers had just four shots on the Comet net, but capitalized on two of them.  A corner kick header six minutes into the contest, by an unidentified player, and a goal by Laker captain,Roberto Gameiro, halfway into the first half, capped all scoring for the contest.

“Unfortunately, the Comets did not show up to play this evening,” said Hillcrest Head Coach Rod Jensen.  “The Lakers did, and played a good ball game.  I will have to blame the coaching staff on this loss.  A lack of team preparation and focus from the Comets was evident this evening.  This provides an opportunity for us to learn, grow, and improve as a team this season.” 

The Comets, now 2-2, travel to Crookston on Thursday.

The Hillcrest Lutheran Academy Boys soccer team defeated Detroit Lakes, 4 – 0, Thursday at the Hillcrest Field in Fergus Falls.
