Gaylen Peterson is an MSU-Moorhead graduate and completed coursework from the University of Wisconsin in River Falls in 2007. He also has a Master's of Science degree in Education/Fine Arts and has been employed at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy as the 7-12 Art Instructor since the fall of 1992.
Mr P. reports, “The best part of teaching at Hillcrest is the opportunity to openly and clearly share the truth of God's love, in the classroom and all other aspects of school life. I particularly enjoy the opportunities to teach Christian Worldview as part of the Bible curriculum."
A verse that has been very meaningful to Gaylen is Galatians 2:20-21, "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!"
When asked about his work in clay, he comments:
"My interests lie specifically in the realm of wood-fired functional wares. You will find a combination of wheel thrown and hand-built pottery, which speak to my appreciation for the aesthetic qualities found in pieces intended for daily use. Wood-firing offers the fantastic transitions of color and surface quality that appeals to me most with regard to my creative work as a potter."
Gaylen and his wife, Kristen, have three daughters: Elisabeth (HLA '14), Meghan (HLA '17), and Katelyn (HLA '20).
Some of Mr. Peterson's other creative interests include Printmaking, Photography and Woodworking.
