Comets Place 17 On Goal in Tough Loss From Penatly Kicks

The Comet Boys Soccer Team faced a tough 2-3 loss against the St. Johns Jonnies on Friday, but the match showcased the Comets’ continued focus on sharpening their offensive attack while building a resilient young defensive core—key elements as they push to strengthen their team in the dawn of a new year.

The game started with a misplayed high ball just four minutes in, allowing a Jonnie striker to score after breaking through the defense. St. Johns extended their lead at the 30-minute mark with a successful penalty kick, leaving the Comets down 2-0 at halftime.

Early in the second half, Zane Holmquist was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick, but his shot went high over the bar. Five minutes later, Zane redeemed himself by scoring a header off a well-placed corner from Haakon Kjaergaard. St. Johns responded with another converted penalty in the 61st minute, but the Comets quickly struck back. Junior Captain Kian Stender delivered a perfectly timed ball to Zane Holmquist, who netted his second goal, narrowing the score to 2-3.

Despite the loss, the Comets outshot the Jonnies 17 to 8, demonstrating the team’s growing offensive pressure.

"Although we didn’t come away with the win, the effort was there, and I’m proud of our team," said the coach. "We created many offensive opportunities and are learning from our mistakes. It's never ideal when games hinge on penalty kicks, but we’re using these moments to make key adjustments."

The Comets now stand at 2-4-0 and are set to travel to Detroit Lakes for their next matchup on Tuesday, September 10, as they continue their hard work to galvanize their squad in turning to mid-season form.
