Comets Boys Lock In on Both Ends, Defeat Long Prairie 3–2

The Comets tightened their game plan Monday afternoon, securing a 3–2 home victory over Long Prairie-Grey Eagle by pairing a sharper defensive approach with decisive offensive execution.

Just 13 minutes into play, Zane Holmquist slipped through the defense off a well-timed feed from Marco Salazar, finishing cleanly to give the Comets the lead. Only four minutes later, Senior Captain Kian Stender stunned the field with a booming free kick from 55 yards over the head of the goalie as he worked to tip the ball over the crossbar in a last-ditch effort on an epic on-frame shocker. It was a goal that head coach Rod Jensen, with 25 years of experience, called one of the top three long-distance goals he’s witnessed. Though Long Prairie pulled one back on a near-post strike before halftime, the Comets entered the break ahead 2–1.

The second half opened with more evidence of Hillcrest’s defensive buy-in. Midfielder Pedro Pereira stripped an opponent at midfield, springing Salazar on a run. Weaving through three defenders, Salazar finished unassisted to stretch the lead to 3–1. Long Prairie countered in the 69th minute, capitalizing on a rare lapse in the back line; the Comets’ tightened structure kept further threats at bay.

The final stat line told the story of the Comets’ growing balance. Hillcrest generated 18 shots on goal while holding LPGE to 11, a testament to both improved defensive coordination and smart attacking movement. Midfielder Ben Hordnes and defenders Caleb Holm, Charlie Eggiman, and Silas Haugstvedt drew special praise for locking down the defensive third.

“I was pleased with the opportunities the Comets created offensively,” Coach Rod Jensen noted. “We must continue to work on finding the back of the net with the opportunities created. We have some areas of defensive improvements we can work on.

In junior varsity action, the Comets earned a 4–1 win behind two goals apiece from Levi DeYounge and Drake Veldhouse. Keeper Bryson Ballweg delivered a perfect second half in goal.

With the victory, the Comets improve to 4–1–1 and turn their attention to Central Minnesota Christian on Monday, September 15.
