"I only got 10 likes in the last 5 minutes, should I take it down?" This line is from the hit song #Selfie. The song describes the a teenage perspective of Instagram, a social media site focused on sharing photos.
A Facebook owned company, Instagram has gained popularity over the years, especially with teenagers and young adults. 51% of teenagers use Instagram daily while 57% of all users access use it in the same time-frame. One-third of all users access it more than once per day. Ashley Lou, a senior at Hillcrest says she checks Instagram 3 times a day. "I follow some fashion things, (I) like clothes and stuff." Karina Larson, a Junior adds, "I go on like once a day, (and) I follow a cat page."
Wayne Stender, Journalism instructor, when asked about the correlation between Instagram and the school paper shares, "I want it (the school paper) to be something that would be worth looking at, and worth reading. How many hours a day do you spend looking through your Instagram posts?...If more people read (the school paper) 'cause it looks nice, that's awesome, but the bigger thing is, are we communicating well within the publication?"
That is the common fault with using social media, accidentally spending too much time looking into meangless posts. Wayne explains that the purpose of instagram should be to communication meaningful things through short, fun posts. Something all communication should do.
