Hillcrest's Knowledge Bowl season kicked off Tuesday with the Junior High traveling to their first meet, bringing home a top 5 placing.
Hillcrest's 8th grade team quickly started out of the gate. Placing 3rd in the written portion, the 8th grade team dusted off cobwebs in the oral round. Juliana Undseth and Thomas Zwiers provided seasoned leadership from their team, consisting of Sydney Batzlaff, Molly McGuire, Eli Hestenes, and Carter Mitchell, who started school at Hillcrest one day prior to the meet.
Hillcrest's 7th grade team followed the wake of the 8th graders. Jonathan Nordlund and Landon Loewen joined Micah Foss, Zeke Ihrke, Wyatt Gilbertson and Teryn Bosek in the oral round. Gathering in front of the green striker strips, the 7th grade team settled into the back of the pack as they gathered themselves in the new competitive surrounding. Through 3 oral rounds, the 7th grade team was in 16th place. As the 18 team competition entered the final round, the 7th grade team rose to the occasion, earning a personal record of 12 points for the day. The late round boost moved the Comet 7th graders up two places, causing them to finish in 14th place in their first meet.
The 8th grade team hovered between second and fourth place all day. A misstep in the final round caused the Comets to lose some valuable final points, bumping their placing from third to fourth, one point behind the third place.
Hillcrest's teams performed well for their first meet. They look forward to two more meets in their Junior High season, one in November and the finale in December.
