Hugs abound on the Danielsen Field every time the Hillcrest's Girls' play. A quick 3 goal lead enabled the Comets to smile their way to another victory, joining Hillcrest's Boys' Soccer team with a winning record and lots of high fives from their coaches.
The Lady Comets pushed the ball up the field early, taking advantage of the fact that this was Walker-Hackensack-Akeley's (WHA) first game of the season. Inside out passes allowed the Comets to control mid-field as they led teammates to the corners for attacks on the net.
Hillcrest's Mari Austevoll won the first goal as she battled in front of the box following a poorly placed pass from WHA. Austevoll beat a defender and took a smooth shot from 9 yards out to score the first goal of the afternoon. Austevoll's surprise led to a round of hugs from teammates who are enjoying their season of success after falling in a heartbreaking game to the Fergus Falls Otters.
Moments later Austevoll worked at another shot in front of the goalie. After a darting deflection from a WHA defender, Anna Kvam placed a smooth sailing shot under the crossbar, out of reach of the stretching WHA goalie, to score Hillcrest's second goal. Kvam's leadership on the field was noted as she walked from the top of the box, after placing her shot, giving high fives to teammates and resetting at midfield to continue the game.
Austevoll scored another goal before the half and ushered the Comets to the shade of the concessions stand where they met coach Jeremy Mueller to discuss their second half strategy. With a 3-0 lead, and a handful of shots defended by goalie Emma Royce, Hillcrest cruised in the second half. Corner kicks gave way to strong midfield play as the Comets dominated time of possession in their march to a historic 2-1 record.
The Lady Comets are establishing themselves as a team to watch. A strong attack with consistent ball control from Austevoll and Malene Haga is made possible from strong defensive and midfield play by Hannah Simpson and Anna Kvam. Hillcrest looks to continue their scoring streak and strong defensive play vs. Detroit Lakes on Thursday at 5pm at Danielsen field.
