Sometimes you win, even when you lose.
The HLA boys basketball team traveled to Waubun on Monday where they lost a hard-fought battle against the 14-4 Bombers with a final score of 69 to 63. Waubun’s Peyton Syverson was unstoppable, dropping 24 points against the Comets’ Kyler Newman and Sean McGuire, who scored 17 each for Hillcrest. Waubun played with a zeal Hillcrest could not match as they ferociously out-rebounded and consistently exploited an unusual number of Comet turnovers.
Following the final buzzer, Waubun’s coach Jon Syverson shed some light on the tenacity his team had displayed on the court. He said that the date of last night’s game had been circled in red on the locker room calendar for some time. The Bombers were highly motivated to beat the rival Comets and they “Came out to play one of their most complete games of the season,” he reported, speaking with coaches Gregg Preston and Ryan Garvin.
Coach Syverson went on to express respect for how the Hillcrest boys conducted themselves in the midst of extreme back-and-forth intensity. As the coaches were talking together, he pointed to the students and players who were helping stack folding chairs and picking up trash in the stands while waiting to load their bus for the ride home.
“Your program,” Syverson stated with admiration, “Is classy.”
Winning is not always found in numbers on a scoreboard.
The Comets, currently 11-5, will match up against Brandon-Evansville on Friday and Wheaton at the UMM on Saturday.
