Hillcrest is proving to be a high-flying offensive powerhouse again this year, scoring their 40th goal in their 5th game of the season. The 14-2 victory over Melrose was a quick strike that opened the door for HIllcrest to continue their enhancement as a team with eyes on State.
The Comets came out and scored early with a corner kick goal taken by Kristian Kvalsvik at four minutes. Kvalsvik booted a rocket beyond the far post to Joar “Scottie” Haavik, who made an impressive header to the left side of the net for the goal.
Three minutes after Haavik's highlight reel strike, Nick Foss scored on a free kick from the right side at the half line. His shot took a favorable bounce for the Comets, soaring over the Melrose keeper. One minute later Haavik scored his second goal of the day before the 10th minute, with a blast from inside the box off a feed from Oystein Larsen.
The Comets proceeded to work on their offensive attack, honing players to release in working on their strikes without going offside. At the 15 minute mark Simon Kandal scored off an assist from Nick Foss. At 16 minutes, Kandal scored again off a feed from Joar Haavik. Two minutes later, Christian Svalland attacked the right goal line and crossed the ball to Kandal at the left post. Kandall let go a shot that was deflected by the Melrose Keeper. Haavik was there for the put back and the score. At 22 minutes, Haavik went beyond a hat trick, scoring again off a pass from the left side from Kandal.
After 26 minutes of Hillcrest's strikes, Melrose worked out an offensive attack, scoring on a free kick just outside the box, following a penalty by the Comets. One minute later, Nick Foss made a long crossing pass to the right side of the field. Isak Jansen gathered it in and placed a shot off the Melrose keeper. Camden Hoganson filled the lane, sending a blistering put-back into the net for his first varsity goal for the Comets. Ten minutes later, with the Comets forward, the ball was gathered up by the Melrose Keeper, and punted behind the Comet Midfield. With Melrose on the attack, Melrose scored their second goal, ending all scoring for the half, with the Comets up 8-2.
Ten minutes into the second half, Haavik placed a pass behind the Melrose defense to Kandal, who flicked the ball over the goalie's advancing out to defend the attack. At 55 minutes, Haavik beat several defenders at the left goal line and placed a centering pass to Kristian Kvalsvik who scored from inside the box. At 60 minutes, Oystein Larsen scored a nice goal assisted from Haavik. Senior Co-Captain, Eric Konynenbelt, scored at 63 minutes off a nice feed from Larsen, attacking the right goal line. At 69 minutes, Konynenbelt scored again off another assist from Larsen. Larsen again, assisted the last goal of the game at 78 minutes when he hit Kandal with a nice pass for the final goal.
The Comets launched 35 shots on the Melrose net during the contest.
“We saw tremendous defense from Tobias Salbuvik, Prem Eide and Senior Co-Captain, Shawn Mallick, from the midfield position, during the game,” said Head Coach Rod Jensen. “Joar “Scottie” Haavik’s was the player of the game for the Comets, with three goals and five assists, including some time in the backfield on defense. It was also his 17th birthday!” Happy Birthday Scottie!
The Comets now 5-1, travel to EGF on Saturday for a match with the Green Wave.
