Hillcrest's new golf team is turning heads in the conference with a series of first place finishes for the guys. John and Mikey Vall have been in the top ten at every meet, with John consistently taking home blue ribbons while his brother Mikey has walked home in second or third place at nearly every meet. The two are setting the pace for Hillcrest's golf team, which is on a tear this spring and continues to improve at nearly every meet.
Mikey played a tough front nine on Tuesday at Tipsinah Moungs in Elbow Lake, MN. His golf partner, Noah Chase, was leading the pace through the first four holes. After a tough par four, where Chase shot two over and Mikey stroked for par, Mikey settled in and finished the front nine with steady pace, shooting par or one over to finish the front nine four over par, tied with perennial state golfer Noah Chase.
As the two leaders made the turn to the back nine Mikey edged ahead by four strokes through the fourteenth hole. Mikey finished the final round shooting one over par, keeping a tight reign on his lead over Chase. Mikey finished the day with a 78, eight over par on the Tipsinah scorecard.
With Mikey shooting some of his best golf this year, the girls team followed suit. Kayla Thompson, Audra Ewan, and Augusta Ewan all shot their best golf of the year. The team is looking for a fourth teammate as the Comet ladies are optimistic they could begin placing in meets with a full squad.
"Great to see Mikey get the win. He's been there all season, and played great." Comet Head Coach Eric Ewan noted. "John, as usual, was right there, too. The girls are really starting to play well. They all had their career best rounds." The Comets will bring their clubs to Pebble Lake Golf Course on Thursday for a home meet.
