Comet Golf Takes First Meet with Top Team Score
Hillcrest picked up where they left off last year. Momentum built in Hillcrest’s relaunched golf program was built in sending John Vall to State last year. Work over the summer had Comet golfers perfecting their swing during the final snow storms of the spring. The first meet of the year was held on Thursday, only a few weeks after the spring thaw receded snow drifts from the fairways at Balmoral Golf course.
Vall was the man to beat on the course. The senior State qualifier finished six strokes under his next competitor, shooting a 74 for the day. The Comets boast a crew of competitors that hope to join Vall in the State meet this year as a team. Mike Vall, John’s younger brother, finished the day with an 87. The two Vall brothers have done a nice job recruiting other golfers from Hillcrest’s small class sizes.
Sophomore Ben Christensen is the newest addition to the Comet golf team. He shot a 95 on the day, two strokes ahead of fellow newcomer Logan Disabella. Returning for the Comets is Joel Quam, who nearly made the State cut last year with his team, and is focused this year to contribute to the Comet squad. He finished the meet on Thursday shooting 101. Nick Foss rounded out the varsity scoring with a 117.
The Comet squad took home top team honors Thursday, Shooting a combined 353 from their top four golfers. The score was seven strokes ahead of their competition. The Comets appear to be the team to beat in the conference, with strong leadership in the Vall brothers, newcomers who are displaying promise and improvement, and strong coaching from Eric Ewan and Cory Thompson.
