Comets Complete Historic Undefeated Season, Eyes Set on Playoffs
The Hillcrest Comets have done what few teams in school history have achieved: finish the regular season undefeated. With a commanding 57-0 win over the Ortonville Trojans on Wednesday, the Comets not only secured perfection on the year but also reignited Comet tradition in looking into the playoff picture.
From the first snap of the season, Hillcrest made it clear they were a team on a mission. Friday’s matchup was no exception. The Comets exploded out of the gate, posting 23 first-quarter points and never looking back. Their 478 yards of total offense reflected a balanced attack and a team firing on all cylinders.
Quarterback Ethan Swedberg continued to shine as the steady hand of the offense. Swedberg threw for 212 yards and five touchdowns while adding another score on the ground. His ability to distribute the ball and extend plays has kept defenses guessing all season.
The receiving corps was equally electric. Sean Berge hauled in three touchdowns, Drew Fischer added nine catches and a score, and brothers Griffen and Maddox Haus each found the end zone, showing Hillcrest’s impressive offensive depth. On the ground, Eli Walkup was a force, rushing for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
As the offense wins games, Hillcrest’s defense shuts the door. The Comets recorded three sacks and four interceptions. Sam Swenson led the charge with two interceptions and helped the cause with a touchdown pass in the second half, while Maverick Peterson and others made key stops that kept Ortonville scoreless. The defensive front dominated the line of scrimmage, collapsing the pocket and setting the tone early.
Head Coach Korey Fry couldn’t hide his pride after the game.
“Amazing finish to the season by our guys,” Fry said. “It’s been well over 20 years since the last undefeated Hillcrest team. Our guys grinded this offseason and season for this moment. We’ll enjoy it for a couple days, then our focus shifts to playoffs, because from here, it’s win or go home.”
Under Fry’s leadership, the Comets have become a model of discipline and purpose. Their unity on the field is matched by a culture of mentorship, brotherhood, and faith off it, a reminder that Hillcrest’s football program is about more than wins; it’s about shaping young men who know who they are in Christ and how to work together toward a common goal.
With the victory, Hillcrest secures the No. 1 seed in the section playoffs and will host the winner of Rothsay and Underwood next Saturday at 2 p.m. on John Luckey Field.
