Knutson Earns 1000th Rebound and Player of the Game at Granite City Classic
Ella Knutson and the Comets stepped out of Christmas break and didn’t look rusty or tentative. Knutson pulled down 15 boards and earned her 1000th rebound and player of the game honors in the Comets' win at the Breakdown Granite City Classic Holiday Showcase. Knutson and the Comets leapt to an early lead and soared to a 65–39 win over Royalton.
A sharp first half built on pace, spacing, discipline, and decision-making sent the Comets into halftime with a 34–17 lead. Rather than easing off, Hillcrest doubled down after the break, continuing to pressure the ball and move with intention on both ends of the floor.
Head coach Hannah Clark pointed to the tempo and intent that brought the results on the scoreboard. “I liked the way we pushed the ball up the floor. Our offensive movement and ability to attack the hoop got our girls a lot of good looks at the basket.”
Elsa Retzlaff led the way offensively, scoring 24 points while staying patient and composed. Coach Clark noted, “Elsa did a nice job looking for her shots, scoring 24 points in a variety of ways.”
The night also belonged to Ella Knutson, who finished with 12 points, 15 rebounds, four assists, and four steals, earning Player of the Game honors while also reaching a career milestone. “Ella was solid for us on both ends of the floor, doing a little bit of everything and finishing with a double-double and collecting her 1000th career rebound,” Clark said.
After the game, Clark reflected on the significance of Knutson's achievement and what it represents within the program. “Her work ethic, discipline, and leadership are so valuable to this team. We are so proud of her!” It was a moment earned through relentless effort, daily discipline, steady leadership, and a deep commitment to team success.
