Comets String Together Big Wins, Building Toward Playoff Push
It’s been a dominant week for the Hillcrest Comets volleyball team, as they put together three straight-set victories that showcase not only their depth but also their growing cohesion as they head toward a crucial playoff stretch this fall.
Grit and Growth Against Lake Park Audubon
The week began at home against Lake Park Audubon, where the Raiders’ relentless swings tested Hillcrest’s defense early and often. The Comets responded with grit, with their back row stepping up in key moments to keep rallies alive. Behind 66 digs and 38 kills, Hillcrest showed they can weather pressure and respond with poise. “Even when we were down at different points in the set, we stayed locked in and battled back,” Coach Debi reflected. That resiliency set the tone for the week.
Serving Surge in Ashby
Traveling to Ashby, the Comets unleashed one of their best serving performances of the season. Racking up a season-high 18 ace serves, Hillcrest pushed the pace and forced the Arrows into constant adjustments. Balanced offensive distribution kept all hitters involved, with Elsa Retzlaff and Kenzie Miller leading the attack. Despite serving just 89% overall, their aggressiveness paid off in a commanding 25-12, 25-11, 25-7 sweep. The night also carried a moment of sportsmanship, as the Comets paused to recognize Battle Lake’s Sophie Akerman for her incredible milestone of 2,000 career set assists.
Total Team Win in Herman
Closing the week on the road against Wheaton-Herman-Norcross, the Comets delivered another convincing sweep (25-14, 25-8, 25-21). The Herman gym was packed, but Hillcrest’s composure shined through. The Comets missed just two serves all night and spread the offense across the lineup, with seven different players contributing kills. The defense dug up 56 balls, ensuring the hitters had plenty of chances to finish points. “Everyone contributed, making it a total team effort,” noted Coach Debi.
Across three matches, Hillcrest racked up 31 ace serves, 167 digs, and 108 kills, proof that their balance on both sides of the net is clicking at the right time. The blend of defensive toughness, aggressive serving, and efficient offensive distribution has them riding a wave of momentum.
As the Comets turn their focus to section opponents like Pelican Rapids, they’re showing that their consistency and confidence aren’t just producing wins, they’re forging a team ready for a playoff run.
