Comets Continue to Build Momentum in Dominant Road Win
The Comets girls basketball team continues to show steady growth and confidence as the season unfolds, turning in another strong performance with a 63–24 win over Border West on Tuesday night.
Hillcrest set the tone early, jumping out to a commanding 43–9 lead at halftime with relentless defensive pressure and crisp ball movement. The Comets never let up, holding Border West to just 24 points for the game while continuing to share the scoring load and push the pace on both ends of the floor.
Offensively, Elsa Retzlaff led the way with 16 points, adding seven rebounds and three assists while scoring in a variety of ways. Ella Knutson followed closely with 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and an impressive six steals, continuing to set the standard with her all-around play. Aaveah Stender delivered one of her most efficient performances of the season, scoring 13 points while finishing at a high clip around the basket. Elin Retzlaff chipped in 10 points, while Brooke Swedberg added five. Paisley Peterson and Stella Moline each scored two points, with Peterson pulling down five rebounds, and Emme Berge contributed five rebounds and four assists to keep the offense flowing.
Defensively, Hillcrest was especially sharp. The Comets forced difficult possessions throughout the night, frequently denying driving lanes and contesting shots, resulting in multiple Border West possessions ending in shot-clock violations. That defensive intensity translated into transition opportunities and open looks as Hillcrest finished shooting 44% from the field, including 55% inside the arc, while limiting Border West’s scoring chances.
Head Coach Hannah Clark was pleased with both the effort and the maturity her team showed.
“This was a super fun game for our girls. It was great to see them play with focus and intensity, especially coming off a big emotional win on Saturday,” Clark said. “I thought we did a great job moving the ball, which allowed multiple girls to contribute offensively. I also thought we were tough on defense, and it was fun to have a number of possessions end in shot clock violations.”
Border West was led by Carlie Schultz with 11 points.
