For those who have passed away between August 31, 2024 and August 31, 2025
(Alphabetical Order)
Ruth (Brekke) Aamot - Class of 1953
Passed away on April 8, 2025
Ruth Lillian Aamot, 88, of Bloomington, MN passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of April 8th, 2025. Ruth was born to Pastor John and Mrs. Lillian Brekke in Frontier, Saskatchewan, Canada. As a PK, “preacher’s kids”, her early years exposed her to life in Seattle, Chicago, Mayville, Fergus Falls, and Minneapolis, sparking a growing curiosity about going into the mission field.
And then…on one fateful Christmas hayride, Ruth, now at the Swedish Nursing Institute, picked up a handful of straw and threw it at a cute guy from Luther Seminary, on the other side of the wagon. For the next few weeks, their shared commitment to live as their Savior’s ambassadors knitted them together.
Ruth shared her passions and gifts with countless people throughout her life, including 14 years as a missionary in Brazil, and returning yearly for over 22 consecutive years, as well as over 50 years in Minnesota. She was loved for being a good listener, exuding compassion, and being a prayer warrior.
This was only enhanced through her last 30 years of blindness, as she sought to be a blessing to those around her. She strongly believed in investing in relationships as a way of serving her God. She cultivated many close friends and helped others to do the same through various groups like Spice of Life, Prayer, and Bible study groups.
Some of her words of wisdom to us were: Live life fully! Take risks. Be kind to others. Be a blessing. Learn to forgive. Don’t hold resentment.
Alice (Helgesen) Aase - Class of 1947
September 25, 1929 — March 3, 2025
Alice Oline Aase, age 95, of Fergus Falls, went home into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on the morning of March 3rd, 2025, at PioneerCare Center with the assistance of Vivi Hospice.
She was born on September 25, 1929, in Brooklyn, NY, to Arthur and Benna (Daastol) Helgesen. She attended elementary school in Brooklyn and graduated high school from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, MN. At each of these places, she developed deep friendships.
In 1952, she married George Aase, and together they built a life centered on faith and family, raising three children: Allen (Carol) Aase, Barbara Olsen, and Linda (Kevin) Patch. Alice faithfully supported George’s ministry as he pastored churches in Maddock, ND; Bunker Hill, NJ; Bloomington, MN; Brooklyn, NY; and Succasunna, NJ. She was a rock to her husband during their ministry. She had a heart for service and found joy in spending time with people. Her radiant smile exuded thoughtfulness, grace and kindness.
In 1989, they moved to Mount Bethel, PA, where Alice worked at the Tuscarora Inn and Conference Center’s Gift and Bookstore. She treasured being a part of the ministry at Tuscarora and reconnected there with old friends and made many new friends. In 2007, she and George returned to Fergus Falls where they were surrounded by many long-time friends. They were active at Bethel Church and enjoyed worshipping there. They eventually moved into Alcott Manor in 2015 - the same building they had once lived in while George attended seminary.
Alice found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved doing jigsaw puzzles, and crossword puzzles while watching Wheel of Fortune. She cherished her summers in Southold, NY, where she enjoyed gathering with friends on the beach, fishing, and swimming. However, her greatest love was her family.
She is survived by her children; grandchildren Kristen Olsen, Becky (Bo) Miller, Kelley (Tom) Scheid, Larissa (Hans) Brue, Cooper Patch and great-grandchildren Evan Olsen, Ashton Olsen Fawcett, George Olsen, Wyatt & Wesley Miller, Macie, Carter & Mia Scheid and Kit & Benna Brue. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Elsie (John) Helgesen.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, George Aase; her parents, Arthur & Benna Helgesen; and her brother, John Helgesen.
Ruth (Abrahamsen) Beason - Class of 1949
September 13, 1930 - May 6, 2025
Ruth Joyce Beason, 94, of Maddock, North Dakota, passed away peacefully at home under hospice care on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. A celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Brethren Church in Maddock, with Pastor Luther "Lu" Mathison officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service, and Ruth will be laid to rest at Zion Cemetery.
Ruth was born on September 13, 1930, to Alfred and Josephine (Norheim) Abrahamson on the family farm near Maddock. She attended Hesper School and Aggies School before graduating from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, MN. She went on to pursue business studies in Minneapolis, laying the foundation for a life of dedication, creativity, and quiet resilience.
It was during a weekend bus ride home around 1950 that Ruth met the love of her life, Charles “Chuck” Beason, who was serving in the United States Air Force. He was so taken with her that he jotted down the address from her luggage tag to write her — and the rest, as they say, was history. Their love story, which began like something out of a classic film, became a lifetime partnership that spanned more than seven decades. They were united in marriage on October 5, 1952, in Pasadena, California.
As Chuck served his country with honor in the Air Force, Ruth stood steadfastly by his side as a faithful and devoted military wife. She embraced the many challenges and sacrifices that came with military life — moving far from home, building new communities, and facing long separations with courage and grace. At just 24, with a toddler in her arms, Ruth bravely journeyed by train to San Francisco and then by military ship to Japan, where she reunited with Chuck and worked as a secretary for eight months. It was one of many examples of her quiet strength and unwavering love.
Ruth’s life was a rich tapestry of devotion, resilience, and grace. A woman of deep faith, she was a loving wife, a devoted mother and grandmother, and a quiet but steady presence to all who knew her. Ruth was a gifted pianist, a talented gardener, a beautiful card maker and endlessly creative. She disliked the spotlight, yet her quiet acts of love spoke volumes. She did everything for others and rarely asked for anything in return.
She treasured life’s simple joys — the scent of fresh flowers, the laughter of her grandchildren, and the comfort of a good cup of coffee. Coffee, in fact, was her daily ritual, and she often said, “You aren’t living if you don’t love coffee.” She taught those around her to slow down, to savor the moment, and to never save joy for a “special occasion.” Every day, she believed, was special.
Though no words can fully capture the depth of Ruth’s spirit or the love she gave, her life will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Her gentle strength, unwavering faith, and boundless love remain a legacy that will continue to guide and inspire.
She leaves behind her beloved husband of 72 years, Charles “Chuck” Beason; her daughter, Linda Sue Ruth Bailey; grandchildren Kristopher (Kattie) Bailey and Dakotah (Jasmine) Bailey; and great-grandchildren June, Grace, Xander, and Tristan Bailey. She is also survived by her nieces Mary Abrahamson (and children Crissy, James, and Zane) and Sandy Abrahamson (and son Aaron).
Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Alfred and Josephine Abrahamson, and her brother Arthur Eugene Abrahamson.
Dagney (Trettevik) Christenson - Class of 1946
December 5, 1927 - November 19, 2024
Dagney Pauline (née Trettevik) Christenson was born in Seattle, Washington, on December 5, 1927. She was the third of five children born to Fred and Gunda (née Rasmussen) Trettevik, second- and first-generation immigrants respectively from the rugged coastal region of western Norway. Her father, a carpenter, built the small house in Ballard, Washington, in which Dagney and her four brothers grew up during the Depression era. Her mother was a nurse. Dagney was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith in a Norwegian Lutheran congregation that originally began as a small mission prayer group that met weekly in the Trettevik family home. The prayer group eventually outgrew the Trettevik home, moved into a rented church building, called its own pastor, and is known today as Rock of Ages Lutheran Brethren Church.
Dagney’s mother was known for her love for the Lord, her passion for world missions, and her practice of hospitality. One Sunday in the final year of WWII, when Dagney was in her mid-teens, her mother invited a young naval seaman named David Christenson home from church for dinner. David and Dagney found themselves washing and drying the dishes together after the meal. Though circumstances soon led them apart, their paths would converge again several years later when both were pursuing college degrees in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
During her final two years of high school, Dagney attended Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, as a boarding student. At Hillcrest, she quickly established a reputation as a star athlete. During her senior year, she was both Girls’ Athletic Director and President of the Girls’ Athletic Association. Following graduation from Hillcrest in 1946 as class salutatorian, Dagney stayed on in Fergus Falls to attend the Lutheran Brethren Bible School for one year, giving her a deeper understanding of the Bible and her own living faith.
In the fall of 1947, Dagney entered Lutheran Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis to pursue a nursing degree. One day, while working as a nurse trainee in the hospital’s maternity ward, she was approached by a young man who looked somewhat familiar. It was David Christenson. He had come to the hospital that day to visit his older sister, who had just given birth to a baby boy. He invited Dagney out on a date and she accepted. They played miniature golf on that first date. Dagney won, and David was hooked.
On June 16, 1951, just a few weeks after Dagney graduated from Deaconess as a registered nurse, the two were married back at Rock of Ages Lutheran Brethren Church in Seattle. Over the next decade and a half, they were blessed with six children: Sandra Kae (1953), Daniel Craig (1957), David Alan (1958), Joel Robert (1959), Brenda Lynne (1962), and Jonathon Mark (1965).
Their first home together was back in Fergus Falls MN. As Dave was completing a Master of Divinity degree at Lutheran Brethren Seminary in preparation for full-time pastoral ministry, Dagney worked at Lake Region Hospital as a surgical nurse. They lived in a small apartment up in “the castle,” where Dave was employed part-time as the Hillcrest Boys’ Dean.
During Dave’s first two decades of pastoral ministry following graduation from seminary in 1953, Dagney stayed at home to focus on the needs of their growing family, although she returned to work as a nurse at several points when finances were stretched. “Pastor Dave” pastored Lutheran Brethren congregations in Ferndale WA (1953-1958), Minneapolis MN (1961-1968), and Lynnwood WA (1968-1972). During those years, he and Dagney also served overseas for two years as missionaries with Lutheran Brethren World Missions in Akita, Japan (1959-1961), where Dave taught full-time at Tohoku Bible School. In addition to keeping her family well-clothed, well-fed, and well-loved during these years, Dagney also took an active role in women’s ministry events at church and graciously welcomed a steady stream of guests and visitors into her home for carefully planned and prepared dinners, luncheons, bridal showers, receptions, and Sunday dinners.
During their last two decades of full-time congregational ministry before Dave’s semi-retirement in 1993, Dagney resumed RN work outside the home—first as a staff nurse at Lake Region Hospital in Fergus Falls MN (1973-1979), and then as a staff nurse at Crista Senior Living in Shoreline WA (1979-1993). With the salary she earned, she and Dave were able to build and then pay off the mortgage on the beloved home in Lynnwood where the extended family would share so many cherished times with them over the years.
As her children gradually left home, married, and started families of their own, “Grandma Christenson” never missed a birthday, graduation, or anniversary, preparing cakes, presents and special meals for those living nearby, and sending cards and gifts to those living in other parts of the country or world. In their retirement years, nothing gave Grandma and Grandpa Christenson greater joy than welcoming their children, sons- and daughters-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren into their home in Lynnwood for laughter-filled family gatherings and celebrations. Grandma Christenson continued to prepare her trademark, multi-course Thanksgiving meals and Christmas dinners well into her 80s.
Grandma Christenson was preceded in death by her father and mother, Fred and Gunda Trettevik of Seattle WA, her husband of 69 years, David Christenson of Lynnwood WA, and three brothers, Fred (Joyce) Trettevik of Bothell WA, Roy (Lois) Trettevik of Seattle WA, and Herbert (Rosella) Trettevik of Shoreline WA. She is survived by: her six children, Sandra Ward of Sammamish, WA, Daniel (Ruth) Christenson of Mt. Bethel PA, David (Eunice) Christenson of Fergus Falls MN, Joel (Elizabeth) Christenson of Fergus Falls MN, Brenda (Frederick) Stoutland of Calabasas CA, and Jonathon (Barbara) Christenson of Bothell WA; her twenty-seven grandchildren; her thirty-seven great-grandchildren; and her brother Gerald (Carol) Trettevik. May the Lord be glorified in and through the life, death, and memory of his beloved daughter, Dagney Pauline Christenson.
Viviann (Knudson) Christenson - Class of 1961
October 24, 1944 — January 14, 2025
Viviann Ann (Knudson) Christenson was born in Grand Forks, ND to Reverend Alfred and Hazel (Klonglan) Knudson on October 24, 1944. She was welcomed by her older brother, Robert Knudson, and older sister, Esther Knudson (Barnum). She moved from rural Fargo, ND and attended elementary school in Argusville, ND at Sheyenne #14. She continued her education at Hillcrest Lutheran Academy and the Lutheran Brethren Bible School, where she majored in Christian Education and World Missions, both located in Fergus Falls, MN. Viviann often told her children (and anyone who was listening) that she believes she had the best upbringing and childhood ever and there is One that was perhaps better, but that child was God…so that didn’t count! Viviann always had a love for music, both singing and playing. She began singing on her dad’s radio program, The Norwegian Gospel Hour, at about 6 years old- and, of course, she was learning and singing in Norwegian!
In 1956, at the age of 12 years old, Vivann met her future husband, Stanley (Stan) Allen Christenson at Stiklestad Lutheran Church in Rural Doran, MN where her father, Rev. Knudson was the pastor. After many years of ‘courting’, the two were united in holy matrimony on November 14, 1965, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, MN. This union was blessed with three daughters, two sons and several grandchildren.
Stanley and Viviann were charter members of Calvary Free Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls, MN where she served the Lord as organist, church secretary, financial secretary, Sunday school and confirmation teacher, and taught Wednesday school and VBS (Vacation Bible School). In addition, she was the WMF (Women’s Mission Federation) president and enjoyed working with the youth of the church for many years.
For several years, Viviann volunteered at the Child Evangelism Local Headquarters and the Salvation Army in Fergus Falls, MN. Her mission was to explain their work to the surrounding areas; however, more important, she was able to share the Good News of Jesus Christ! During this time, she wrote many songs which she sang (while playing on her autoharp) in the ministry of these opportunities and at a number of district WMF gatherings. For several years (and most of her children’s lives), she was the ‘official’ organist for one of the local funeral homes, playing in local churches, nursing homes and chapels.
In April 2013, after retirement, Stan and Viviann relocated to the Association Retreat Center (ARC) in Osceola, WI where they were founders of S.O.H.Lmates (Servants of His Love) Volunteer Program. While living in the area, the couple attended Amery Free Lutheran Church becoming active members and enjoying followship with their “Amery Family”.
At the age of 80, Viviann passed away peacefully to be with the Lord on January 14th, 2025 surrounded by her children. She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Christenson, her parents, Reverend Alfred and Hazel Knutson, and her sister Esther. She is survived by her five children: Mayme (Ronald) Hofland of Fergus Falls, MN, Anthony (Darla) Christenson of Lisbon, ND, Allean Christenson of Osceola, WI, Eric (Andrea) Christenson of Plymouth, MN, and Nicole Christenson of Plymouth, MN, along with numerous grandchildren; brother, Robert Knutson of McVille, ND; and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

David Andrew Erickson - Class of 1984
June 18, 1966 - November 1, 2024
David Andrew Erickson, 58, of White Bear Lake, MN, passed away on November 1st, 2024.
David was born June 18th, 1966, in Fargo, ND, the son of John and Sue (Wyatt) Erickson.
David graduated from Hillcrest Academy, Fergus Falls, MN in 1984, then went on to the University of Wisconsin, River Falls for two years before transferring to Concordia College, Moorhead, MN, earning Bachelor of Science degrees in Math and Computer Science.
David married Kari Marie [Amundson] Erickson on 10/02/93 at Kari's home church in Swift Falls, MN. David and Kari welcomed two wonderful children into the world; Alyssa and Wyatt, and just recently celebrated 31 years of marriage with a trip to the Apostle Islands and the North Shore of Minnesota.
David worked as an IT Manager at BWBR, beginning his 29-year career on September 11th, 1995, as their first "official" IT employee. A few of David's initial projects included introducing email and the first BWBR website. David played on the company's softball team, built strong and lasting relationships with his co-workers, and planned to finish his career at BWBR.
David especially loved woodworking, cooking/grilling, the outdoors, reading, watching funny or nerdy shows or movies and helping anyone who needed a hand. Singing meant a lot to him. He enjoyed sharing his voice throughout his entire life, singing in high school and college choirs, and ultimately a men's choir that included a choir tour dream trip to Norway, which Kari also enjoyed attending. David simultaneously sang in both the Exultate choir and church choirs until he retired from Exultate in 2019, after 18 years with the group. He continued singing with the Community of Grace Lutheran church choir, happily switching from being a tenor to a bass, depending on which part needed more singers.
David's favorite sport to play in recent years was golf. He was always excited when the snow melted and he could finally get on the course. He loved playing with his father, John, son, Wyatt and brother, Joel, and for the last 9 years, he and his friend, Dan were able to make annual weekend golf trips to various courses.
David seemed to be a true jack of all trades. He taught Kari the finer arts of cooking. He also knew cars, carpentry, lawn care, house maintenance, laundry, computers and anything technical/number related. Kari was grateful he had a math degree and was able to help the kids and his sister with math problems. He was everyone's go-to IT support both at work and at home. He also seemed to have the magical ability to make all babies and animals like him. He was so proud when he could make a baby laugh!
The trips that David and his family took over the years were highlights for everyone. From the North Shore to Wyoming, and from Tennessee to St. Louis, all were memorable.
Remaining to cherish David's memory are spouse, Kari Marie Erickson; children, Alyssa Erickson and Wyatt Erickson; parents, John and Susan Erickson; brother, Joel and (Jill) Erickson; sister, Kari Elizabeth Erickson; mother in law, Lorraine Amundson; sister in law, Aimee Steffensen; brothers in law, Thor and (Vicki) Amundson, Travis and (Alexa) Amundson; 7 nieces, 2 nephews, 3 great-nieces and 8 great-nephews, along with numerous extended family members, friends and coworkers.
David's funeral service will be held Monday, November 11th, 2024, at 1 p.m. at Community of Grace Lutheran Church, White Bear Lake, MN, with Pastor Angie Way officiating. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 PM. The funeral will also be livestreamed – please use this link https://www.youtube.com/live/xYkqEdI9VBI to view David's funeral online.
Memorial donations in David's memory may be directed to one or more of his favorite charities, such as: The Exultate Choir, Regions Heart Center, Children's Hospital of Minnesota or Community of Grace Lutheran Church in WBL.
The Erickson family very much appreciates your kind words and expressions of sympathy. No individual acknowledgments will be sent.
Edith Gahre - Attended with the Class of 1962
September 13, 1944 - October 3, 2024
Edith "Edie" Gahre (80) went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, October 3, 2024 after a long and courageous battle with diabetes. Edie was born September 13, 1944 to Oskar and Tonette (Nilsen) Gahre (both immigrants from Norway) in Staten Island, New York. She was the youngest of three sisters.
Though Edie grew up in Staten Island, she had the unique opportunity to spend time living at her grandparents' farm in Mosvold, Norway as a toddler and then again as a teenager which produced some of her most cherished memories and deepened her love of her Norwegian heritage. She attended Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, MN for her junior year and the first half of her senior year. During her time at Hillcrest, God blessed Edie with a deepening faith and many lifelong friends. She graduated from Port Richmond High School in Staten Island, NY.
Edie was gifted with many artistic talents. She was accomplished at knitting and all types of needlework. One could not tell the front side from the back side of her handiwork, a skill she learned from her mother early on. She excelled at baking, holiday decorating, gardening, rosemaling, and ceramics. She gifted her family and friends with the many items she made or baked.
Edie's interests included church, Bible studies, listening to hymn music and radio sermons, ice staking, skiing, reading, spending time at the beach, traveling, and collecting various treasures dear to her heart. She had been a member of Sons of Norway and Vesterheim.
Edie had an unwavering saving faith in Jesus Christ. Her class motto from her senior year at Hillcrest was "Looking Unto Jesus" and she did just that, looking unto Jesus and seeing His faithfulness throughout her life. Her favorite Bible passage was Psalm 23.
She loved the Lord Jesus, her family, and friends and leaves behind a beautiful legacy of her children and grandchildren.
Daniel Haakenson - Class of 1965
July 11, 1947 - June 4, 2024
Daniel Haakenson, 76, Bismarck, passed away on June 4, 2024.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, June 10, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
Daniel Thomas Haakenson was born on July 11, 1947 in Minot, ND. He grew up on the family farm in tiny Maxbass, ND and attended school there until 6th grade when he transferred to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls. Dan graduated from Minot State University in 1980.
Dan was very proud of his 22 years in the National Guard retiring as Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. Dan was brilliant and always thinking of his next entrepreneurial adventure. The Maxbass Mini, a local newspaper, jump started his love for running a business. He and his brother Dave created the content, sometimes having to make it up due to lack of news in the area. He always told the story about how the professors at a ND college used the Mini as a tale of what ‘not’ to do but in the end, the little newspaper had quite a following.
In the early 80’s he taught computer classes in our garage and continued working on computers through his life developing websites and programming, he started The Coupon Shopper (he was way ahead of his time, think Groupon), Gourmet Gardens, PC Services, Dakota Oak, Inttech, and refurbishing tractors.
The Gourmet Gardens was a family business and Dan published a book about it called The Small Commercial Garden, How to Make $10,000 in your backyard. The book was featured on Ag Day in 1995 and orders for it poured in prompting him to revise the book for another run.
Dan is survived by his daughters, Becky Haakenson and Julie Walker of Bismarck, granddaughter, Elizabeth Haakenson, sister; Mary Haakenson and brothers John, Bob (Michal Ann), and sisters-in-law, Kathleen Kler & Linda Haakenson.
He was preceded in death by his children, Marsha and Marlin Haakenson, his parents, Melvin and Esther Haakenson, brothers, Teddy, Phil, and Dave Haakenson and sister, Ethel Thompson as well as his brother-in-law, Larry Thompson.

Mara attended Lutheran High in Bloomington for a few years before completing her senior year at Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, MN. She was a light to all who knew her, remembered for her kindness, strength, and compassion. Her passing leaves an immeasurable void, but her spirit lives on in the many lives she touched. They spent four wonderful years in Saskatoon and welcomed Sharon, David, and Ethan into the family. Their friendships with families there continue to this day. Joanne (Moline) Freeland - Class of 1959
July 2, 1941 — August 11, 2025
Joanne Freeland, 84, of Erhard, died Monday, August 11, 2025 at Essentia Health in Fargo.
Joanne Theresse Freeland (née Moline) was born July 2, 1941, to James and Charlotte Moline in Rolette, ND. Her childhood on the farm in Rolette was full of lively family activity, and as the oldest of 12 children, she was a big help to her parents. From her mother, Charlotte, she learned homemaking, gardening and parenting skills she would later put to good use as she ran her own busy household.
At age 14, Joanne left her home to attend Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, MN, where she studied for four years, after which she attended NDSU in Fargo for a year. Besides getting an education, Joanne also met her beloved and devoted husband Glenn (Freeland), the love of her life, at Hillcrest, and on December 30, 1960, they married. They moved to the family farm in Mayville, ND, in 1961 and farmed in partnership with Glenn's brother Keith for 35 years.
They had four children: Jan, Jacquelyn, Jonathan, and Jason. The Freeland clan enjoyed doing farm work, sports, travel, and church activities together; and Joanne was an active participant, including driving beet truck. But what her family loved the most was the delicious home cooking that she prepared for every meal. She was known for her hospitality, for the beautiful tables she set, and for opening her home with a big heart to hundreds of people throughout the years. Thanks to Joanne, the Freeland home was always a center of family and church activity.
Joanne was a devout follower of Jesus, and her faith always guided her actions. She and Glenn were very active in the Cummings Evangelical Free Church, where Joanne was very involved in church life including singing and leading women's ministries. She and Glenn were also youth group leaders for 15 years and poured their hearts into this ministry. They loved to spend time with young people, demonstrating through their own lives how to wholeheartedly love and serve God.
Anyone who knew Joanne though, knew that singing was one of the greatest loves and sources of joy in her life. She had a beautiful soprano voice and sang often in church, and even more often with her six sisters (sometimes they even let their six brothers join them!). In high school, she travelled across the U.S. with the Jubilaires, a female singing quartet from Hillcrest. They even put out an album! Over the years, Joanne and her sisters performed at many venues and celebrations, often to encourage and show love to people who needed it. And just the week before she went home to be with Jesus, she was singing her favorite songs from her heart in the hospital room with her sisters and her daughters.
But even more than her love of singing, was her love for family. Joanne was a born cheerleader, always supporting and encouraging those around her. She loved to go to all the various sporting events that her kids participated in. She kept up the tradition with her grandkids, attending their snowmobile and motocross races, basketball and football games, volleyball matches, plays, musicals (maybe her favorite!), graduations, birthday celebrations, and any other event that included one or more of her 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She also joined her family members on adventures such as snowmobiling, skiing, camping, biking, and even rode extensively around the Midwest behind Glenn on his Goldwing motorcycle!
Spending the winters at their beautiful condo in Reddington Shores, FL gave them the opportunity to make close friends with many wonderful people there. Once again, their hosting talents were amply used as they opened their hearts and home to a steady stream of family and friends who enjoyed their hospitality. Glenn and Joanne also loved to travel together, and enjoyed seeing the world with family and friends via cruise ship and campers.
Joanne also volunteered extensively. She and Glenn made three trips to Central Asia, visiting many remote locations as part of their Crosslink Development International leadership roles, blessing people with their love, care, and support wherever they went. She also served as the President of the General Federation of Women's Club (GFWC) where she spearheaded a program which raised funds to purchase books for public school libraries.
Although Joanne struggled with psoriatic arthritis and other health issues, she put up a valiant fight until the day she went to her glorious, eternal home. When she passed from this life to meet her Savior, all four of her children and eight of her grandchildren were by her side, laying hands on her as her beloved husband Glenn prayed over her.
Joanne is survived by husband of 64 years, Glenn Freeland. Joanne was also survived by her children Jan Stilwell (Dave) of Fergus Falls; Jackie Jerde (Joel) of Delano, MN; Jon Freeland (Michelle) of Minneapolis, MN; Jason Freeland (Cindy) of Corcoran, MN; and grandchildren Michael (Kim), Alexander, and Caleb (Jayna) Stilwell; Stephen (Sam), Benjamin (Haley), and Curtis Jerde; Sid Schaben; Elias, Vince, Annika, and Isabella Freeland; Drew, Brady and Morgan Freeland; and great-grandchildren Maude and Mabel Jerde.
Joanne was preceded in death by her brothers, Dan Moline (Kay) and John Douglas "Doug" Moline (Emma) and is survived by siblings Jim Moline (Arlyne), Claudia Pryor (Don), Carole Schiesser (Dale), Nathan Moline (Athena), Naomi Larson (Mark), Val Hobbs (Talmadge), Tom Moline (Gladys), Kay Stalcar, Wendi Peterson (Scott), and Craig Moline (Holly).

Margaret L. Seland, age 89, of Fergus Falls, MN passed away Monday afternoon, June 23, 2025, at LB Broen Home surrounded by family. She was born September 28, 1935, to Alf and Johanne (Nilsen) Benson in Brooklyn NY.
Margaret graduated from Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in 1953. After high school she attended Lutheran Brethren Schools in Fergus Falls, enrolling in the Bible College. It was during this time she met her future husband, Paul Seland, from Westby, WI. Margaret and Paul were married on June 15, 1963, at 59th Street Lutheran Brethren Church in Brooklyn NY.
Before her marriage she worked in Manhattan for 8 years at Mobil Oil Co. She held the positions of secretary to the VP of Marketing and Manufacturing and assistant secretary to the Chairman and CEO. After Paul graduated college in Moorhead, MN, he went back home and worked various jobs including the family farm. They kept in touch through letters and calls. While Margaret enjoyed her career, she also desired to be married and have a family. After a long-distance relationship lasting 7 years, Margaret and Paul were married. They lived in Westby and had two sons, David and Richard. Margaret raised her boys and also worked part time at the Westby Times Newspaper. In 1980 they purchased the funeral home in LaFarge, WI and moved there. Margaret worked at the Vernon County Treasurer's office and later became the County Treasurer. She served three elected terms. In 1998 they received the news that Paul had cancer. Margaret cared for Paul 24/7. She and many others prayed and pleaded for physical healing. The Lord had other plans. He called Paul home to Heaven in August of '99. At 63, Margaret became a widow. People would occasionally ask if she would remarry. Her answer was always the same, "I will always be Mrs. Seland".
In 2000, she moved to Fergus Falls. She wanted to be closer to the grandkids. She worked in the finance office at the Church of the Lutheran Brethren. She later was the bookkeeper at her son's flooring store. Upon retirement, Margaret moved to the Village Cooperative in Fergus Falls. She loved it there, often recruiting new members. She lived there 13-1/2 years. In November of '23 she moved to Park Gardens in Fergus Falls.
Margaret enjoyed opening up her home to friends and family, cooking meals, accounting work, gardening, board games, card games, going on walks, biking, picnics, camping, canoeing, traveling and in her younger years swimming and playing sports.
Margaret also enjoyed serving others. She volunteered many hours to beloved organizations' boards, committees and volunteer projects. Churches, Christian Schools, Village Coop, Hospitals, Crisis Pregnancy Center, Sunday Schools, Children and Women's Ministries, WI and OT County Republican Party, retirement ministries and election volunteering. She was a gifted musician. She sang in many choirs. She fondly reminisced about participating in the 1957, four thousand voice choir at Yankee Stadium during the 16-week Billy Graham Crusade. She sang duets with her husband at weddings and funerals, guitar and harp playing. She could play piano and organ by ear and used these gifts at every church she was part of. She was a loyal friend. She loved to visit over coffee and dessert. She often made new friends by her outgoing, warm personality, always with smiles and laughter. Her approach to others can be summed up with the words from Colossians 4:6 "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one".
Margaret loved Jesus. She made the decision at an early age to trust and follow Him as her personal Lord and Savior. She believed in living out her faith, proclaiming to others through words and deeds. She loved her husband, family, the bible, church, friends, pastors, music, her Norwegian heritage, devotions, bible study & prayer and meaningful discussions about spiritual things. Some of her favorite verses were Philippians 1:21, Psalm 73:23-26, Psalm 90:14, Psalm 94:19 and I Cor. 2:9. Her heart was always open to helping those in need—family, friends, patients, and staff alike—treating everyone she encountered as part of her extended family. After his mother’s passing, he moved with his sisters to Minneapolis and attended Falwell Junior High. As a ninth grader, he enrolled at Hillcrest Academy in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, where he excelled academically and met his beloved, Eleanor Erlandson. They graduated in 1951.
Dan went on to earn a degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, graduating in 1957. He and Eleanor married in 1956 and eventually made their home in Edina, Minnesota, where they raised their three children.
Dan was a private, disciplined man who prioritized family and found fulfillment in the challenges of entrepreneurship, founding three successful businesses. He lived his faith in many ways, remaining deeply committed to his church community at Normandale Lutheran Church. He trusted God to guide his life and strived to make a positive impact wherever he went.
A lover of the outdoors, Dan enjoyed planning family road trips and spending time at the family lake property, “Nordhem,” where cherished memories were made; hiking, canoeing, fishing, skiing, picking raspberries, and chopping firewood. He was also an avid cyclist, logging thousands of miles over the years.
In his later years, Dan devotedly cared for Eleanor through her journey with Alzheimer’s, remaining faithfully by her side until her passing in 2020.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Eleanor, son Peter, nine siblings, and son-in-law Mark Allen.
Dan is survived by his children, Anita (Gary), Mark (Ann), and daughter-in-law Kirsten; seven grandchildren, Jonathan (Sarah), Jef, Missy (Isaiah), Joel, Emma, Mitch (Meredith), and Hannah; and four great-grandchildren.
Rolfe Sunwall - Class of 1975
October 3, 1957 - October 28, 2024
Rolfe Merlin Sunwall was born October 3, 1957, in Conrad, Montana. He was the fourth child of seven born to Sam and Doris Sunwall. A big loving family where he had built in best friends. He attended schools in Conrad and Dutton. Growing up on the family farm is where Rolfe worked hard and played harder. He enjoyed the finer things in life like riding dirt bikes, beach start water skiing at Tiber Reservoir, and working in the shop on his GTO. In high school he was a proud Conrad Cowboy until he left to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Fergus Falls, Minnesota. There he completed his Junior and Senior year, graduating in 1975. At Hillcrest he put on football pads for the first time and also enjoyed playing basketball. We often were graced with tales of his glory days. While at Hillcrest Rolfe met Lillian “Miss Norway” and they fell in love. They were true high school sweethearts.
In 1977, Rolfe moved to Seattle to be closer to Lillian. While there he worked under Magne Telnes (his future father-in-law) and became an electrician. This trade would serve him well as he did it all his life. During his time in Seattle, he made lifelong friends. In September of 1979, Rolfe and Lil were married at Rock of Ages in Seattle, Washington. They were married for 45 long years. In 1980, their daughter, Trisha, was born and in 1984, their son, Caleb, was born. A couple months after Caleb was born, they packed up and moved to Montana where they lived for the next 40 years, creating a beautiful life under the Big Sky.
He was brought to the Lord in baptism as an infant and confirmed in his teenage years. While at Bible Camp in the Bear Paws he gave his life to the Lord. His faith grew as he attended Hillcrest Lutheran Academy for his high school years. Rolfe loved Jesus and would want you all to know Him too. He served faithfully at a few churches over the years and most recently served at Solid Rock for the past 27 years. Rolfe spent his Saturdays mowing the lawn at church and Sundays perfecting the sound for the worship team.
Rolfe started Sunwall Electric and was self-employed for many years fixing things all over Great Falls. He never met a stranger and could talk to anyone. On Thursdays he would meet for coffee with his buddies, Ken and Rich, a tradition for many years. Rolfe loved the outdoors, hunting, horseback riding, camping, skiing, and golfing. Over the years he had many beloved animals, from horses to goldens, and most recently a mutt he lovingly named, Reba, the queen of 2nd Avenue North.
Rolfe had a red tool for everything and loved helping his family and friends. His farmer roots ran deep. He took pride in his lawn and many others too. Sometimes you would hear a lawn mower going only to realize that it was Rolfe out mowing your lawn. He taught his kids many things, but most importantly to love the Lord and our family well. Also, he often told us to go wash our car.
Rolfe had a special relationship with each one of his family members and loved his nieces and nephews so much. Each one has a story about him. Most recently he enjoyed trips to the Bob Marshall Wilderness with all the Sunwall men in the family. It was such a special time, and the number of guys grew each year. He taught his love of the mountains to them all.
Rolfe loved being a grandpa. His first grandchild, Lilliana, named him Pop Pop and it stuck. He was so proud to show up for all the kids’ concerts and games. He often thought of them while he was out and about. Always proud of his good deal, he would share his treasures with them. Rolfe's granddaughters will carry on his love of thrifting and his grandson will carry on his love of fancy muscle cars. He also stressed to the girls that maybe their free throws needed some more work.
He loved a good adventure and Lillian was always game to follow him. Their most recent travels brought them on an Alaskan cruise with John and Anita, which was such a special time.
Rolfe had a heart attack 23 years ago however, you would never know it because he still worked hard. He mentioned how thankful he was to be able to see both his children graduate, get married, and have children. We are so thankful we had these years with him.
Rolfe went to be with the Lord on October 28, 2024, surrounded with so much love from his family. A viewing and visitation will be held at O’Connor Funeral Home, 2425 8th Ave N, Great Falls, MT from 5-7 pm on Friday, November 1st. A celebration of life will be held at Solid Rock Bible Church, 751 4th Ave NW, Great Falls, MT on Saturday, November 2nd at 1pm. If you’d like, dress like Rolfe, Montana fancy with jeans and your best boots. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Great Falls Rescue Mission, 408 2nd Ave S, Great Falls, MT 59405.
Survived by his wife, Lillian; children, Trisha (Nick) Heck and Caleb (Whitney) Sunwall; grandchildren, Lilliana and Addisyn Heck and Cecelia and Morgan Sunwall; sister-in-law, Martha Sunwall; sister, Marie (Roy) Barsness; brother, Darell (Janet) Sunwall; sister, Maureen (Curt) Nelson; brother, Ronald (Lynn) Sunwall; brother-in-law, Rodney (Karen) Telnes; sisters-in-law, Linda (Brad) Thompson and Anita (John) Hardy; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
