Comets Rise And Shut Out Otters 3-0

Some wins add another number to the record; others show a team is becoming something more. Saturday’s 3-0 victory over the cross-town Fergus Falls Otters felt like the latter for the Comet boys soccer team.

Playing on the turf of Kennedy Field, the Comets combined relentless defensive pressure, sharp passing, and explosive finishing to shut out the Otters and continue their undefeated start to the 2026 season. From the opening whistle, both teams played with the intensity expected from a rivalry match.

“Both teams came out ready to play,” Comet Head Coach Rod Jensen noted following the game. Looking back on the first half, it was clear Hillcrest has developed a sharper approach to soccer. The Comets pressured the ball aggressively, disrupted Fergus Falls before attacks could fully develop, and quickly transitioned from defense into dangerous scoring opportunities. That pressure paid off in the 18th minute.

Marco Salazar collected the ball near midfield in the first half, lifted his head, and slipped a pass toward the right side. Jakob Vindenes received it in space and wasted little time. Vindenes drove a powerful shot into the upper-left corner of the Otter net. 1-0 Comets. Six minutes later, Hillcrest struck again. This time Christopher Thorbjoernsen found Vindenes, and the Comet attacker delivered his second goal of the afternoon, giving Hillcrest a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Hillcrest came out of halftime determined not to let Fergus Falls back into the game. It took just one minute. Salazar again became the creator, setting up Noah Evardsen, who finished the opportunity to extend the Hillcrest advantage to 3-0. The Comets had created separation on the scoreboard. Now they had to protect it. That is where Hillcrest’s back line took over.

Charlie Eggiman, Filip Lund, Oskar Moi, and Davi Diniz continually frustrated the Fergus Falls attack, stepping into passing lanes, closing down space, and making it difficult for the Otters to generate clean looks at goal. “I felt our team defense played well, aggressively pressuring the ball,” Jensen said. “Our back line, Charlie Eggiman, Filip Lund, Oskar Moi, and Davi Diniz did an excellent job upsetting the Otter attacks.” Behind them, senior goalkeeper Will Selvig made sure nothing slipped through. Through the course of the entire match, the Otters put five shots on goal. Selvig stopped all five.

Hillcrest produced nine shots on goal at the other end and converted three of them. The Comets have shown they can score. Saturday showed they can also suffocate an opponent defensively, something the Comets haven’t been able to display in their previous games of the season.

Hillcrest travels to East Grand Forks on Monday to face the Green Wave.
