Comets Continue Climb with 4-0 Win in EGF

The Hillcrest Comets are no longer simply off to a good start. They are beginning to establish an identity. Using patience in the first half, an explosive start to the second, and another relentless defensive effort to keep their perfect season intact, Hillcrest moved to 5–0 Monday night with a 4–0 road victory over East Grand Forks. The Comets netted four goals by three different scorers. Nine shots on goal with zero allowed in their own net.

Monday, Hillcrest showed they can win even when everything doesn’t click immediately. “The Comets started out slow this evening but showed some patience in their attacks, spreading the ball around the backfield and changing the field of attack,” Comet Head Coach Rod Jensen said. “Our team defense worked hard to maintain pressure on the ball.” That patience mattered.

Rather than forcing attacks into crowded spaces, Hillcrest moved the ball across its back line, changed the point of attack, and waited for East Grand Forks to give them an opening. The first one came quickly enough.

Just seven minutes into the match, Marco Salasar helped unlock the Green Wave defense, finding Jakob Vindenes for the opening goal and a 1–0 Comet lead. For Vindenes, it continued an impressive start to the season. The junior attacker has already scored four goals on the season, including two in Hillcrest’s 3–0 rivalry victory over Fergus Falls. But after that early strike, East Grand Forks locked down and kept the game within their reach. Hillcrest created opportunities but couldn’t add to the lead before halftime. The Comets went into the break ahead 1–0, leaving the outcome very much unsettled.

Then came the second half, and it took Hillcrest only two minutes to change the feel of the game. Benjamin Skaug collected the ball nearly 35 yards from goal and unleashed a long-range blast from 25 yards out that found the net, doubling Hillcrest’s lead to 2–0. It was the kind of goal that can transform a match in an instant.

At the 46-minute mark, Pedro Hilton found Marco Salazar with a well-placed pass into the middle of the penalty area. Salazar, who had assisted the first goal of the night, turned from creator to scorer and finished the chance for a 3–0 Hillcrest advantage. That sequence captured one of the most difficult things about defending this Comet team. A strike to the net can come from almost anywhere and from nearly anyone on the field.

With four minutes remaining, Hillcrest added one more. This time Vindenes set up the assist, finding Skaug for his second goal of the match and the final tally in a 4–0 victory. Skaug’s two-goal performance gives him three goals this season and provides another example of the growing depth in Hillcrest’s attack.

The Comets finished with nine shots on goal and sent several additional attempts over the crossbar that could easily have added to the total. But the offensive numbers tell only half the story. Hillcrest’s defense once again refused to give an opponent room to breathe. Rather than simply retreating and protecting the penalty area, the Comets worked collectively to apply pressure to the ball, forcing East Grand Forks to make decisions under stress, preventing the Green Wave from building sustained attacks.

The success from the varsity match translated to more Comet pressure in the JV game, where Hillcrest earned a 5–1 victory. Thad Hickman scored twice for the Comets, while Eli Pangman, Evan Dyoery, and Cayden Carpenter each added a goal. That production from the JV squad also points toward something larger than one undefeated varsity season. More players throughout the program are gaining experience, finding the net, and preparing themselves for future opportunities.

Hillcrest returns home Tuesday for a 4 p.m. matchup with the Moorhead Spuds at Danielsen Field.
